Douglas Busk
Douglas Laird Busk (1906–1990) was a British diplomat, mountaineer and geographer. Personal life Busk was born on 15 July 1906 and educated at Eton and New College, Oxford, also spending some time at Princeton University. He married Bridget Hemsley Thompson in 1937, and they had two daughters. She was an artist and her line drawings illustrate his 1957 book ''The Fountain of the Sun ''. He died on 11 December 1990, aged 84, at Chilbolton. Diplomatic career Baird joined the diplomatic service in 1927 and served in countries including Iran, Hungary, Japan, Turkey and Iraq. He served as Britain's ambassador to Ethiopia (1952–1956), Finland (1958–1960) and Venezuela (1961–1964). Mountaineering Baird was a notable mountaineer, gaining membership of the Alpine Club while an undergraduate, after making the first winter ascent of the north face of Pic du Midi d'Ossau. Edward Teshmaker Busk
Lieutenant Edward Teshmaker Busk, London Electrical Engineers. RE(T) (8 March 1886 – 5 November 1914) was an English pioneer of early aircraft design, and the designer of the first full-sized efficient inherently stable aeroplane. He was the son of Thomas Teshmaker Busk (1852–1894) and Mary Busk née Acworth (1854–1935), of Hermongers, Rudgwick, Sussex. After attaining First Class Honours in Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge in June 1912 he became Assistant Engineer at the newly formed Royal Aircraft Factory, Farnborough, later the Royal Aircraft Establishment. Here he devoted much of his time to the mathematics and dynamics of stable flight. In the early years of powered flight inherent stability in an aircraft was a most important quality. George Busk
George Busk FRS FRAI (12 August 1807 – 10 August 1886) was a British naval surgeon, zoologist and palaeontologist. Early life, family and education Busk was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was the son of the merchant Robert Busk and his wife Jane. Robert Busk was the son of Sir Wadsworth Busk, who was an Attorney General of the Isle of Man. Jane Busk's father, John Westly, was Customs House clerk in St. Petersburg. He studied at Dr. Hartley's School in Yorkshire. He studied surgery in London, at both St Thomas' Hospital and for one session at St Bartholomew's Hospital. Career Busk was appointed assistant-surgeon to the Greenwich Hospital in 1832. He served as naval surgeon first in . He later served for many years in , which had fought at Trafalgar. In Busk's time it was used by the Seamen's Hospital Society as a hospital ship for ex-members of the Merchant Navy or fishing fleet and their dependants. Hans Busk (1772–1862)
Hans Busk the elder (28 May 1772 – 8 February 1862) was a Welsh poet, who published poems during the period 1814–34. His poems included titles such as "The Banquet", "The Dessert" and "The Vestriad". Although obscure today, they did receive some attention at the time, for instance "The Banquet" and "The Vestriad" were reviewed in the ''Literary Gazette'', the latter on the front page. Hans Busk lived at Glenalder Hall (or Glenalders), Nantmel, Radnorshire, Wales, and was a justice of the peace. He served as High Sheriff of Radnorshire in 1837. He later lived at Culverden Grove, Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He lived for many years at Great Cumberland Place, near Hyde Park in the City of Westminster, where he died in 1862. Hans Busk (1815–1882)
Hans Busk the younger Deputy Lieutenant, DL (11 May 1815 in London – 11 March 1882 in Westminster) was one of the originators of the "Volunteer Force, Volunteers". He was educated at King's College London and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating with a BA in 1839 and an Master of Arts (Oxbridge and Dublin), M.A. in 1844. He was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1841. While still an undergraduate, he lobbied the Government to form rifle clubs for defence against invasion, and created a model rifle club at Cambridge in 1837. This grew into the "Volunteer Force, Volunteers" movement, which he helped to pioneer. He served with the 1st Middlesex Rifle Volunteers and with the Royal Victoria Rifle Club, and wrote a number of practical manuals regarding rifle training. He was styled "Captain Busk". Rachel Harriette Busk (1831—1907) was a British traveller and folklorist. Life She was born in 1831, in London. She was the youngest of five daughters of Hans Busk the elder and his wife Maria; and sister of Hans Busk the younger and of Julia Clara Byrne. She was the sister-in-law of Sir Robert Loder, 1st Baronet through her sister Maria Georgiana. She collected tales from Italy, Spain, Mongolia and elsewhere. Her collection included folklore, supernatural events, legends of saints, and humorous anecdotal material. Her work on Italian folklore was strongly influenced by the work of Giuseppe Pitrè She converted to Catholicism in 1858 and lived in Rome after 1862. Richard Busk
Richard Dawson Busk (21 June 1895 — 24 December 1961) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of W. G. Busk, he was born at Marylebone in June 1895. He was educated at Marlborough College, where he played cricket, rugby and rackets for the college. While still a schoolboy at Marlborough College, Busk played minor counties cricket for Dorset in the Minor Counties Championship. From Marlborough, he attended the Royal Military College and was commissioned into the 9th Queen's Royal Lancers as a second lieutenant in December 1914, five months into the First World War. He was promoted to lieutenant in February 1916. Following the war, he made two appearances in first-class cricket for Hampshire in 1919, against the Australian Imperial Forces cricket team and Surrey. Søren Thomas Busk (born 10 April 1953) is a Danish former footballer who played as a defender. He usually played either right-back or in central defence. He played professionally for a number of European clubs, and helped Gent win the Belgian Cup. He gained 61 caps and scored two goals for the Denmark national football team and represented Denmark at the Euro 1984, 1986 World Cup, and Euro 1988 tournaments.
