Bus Reshaping Plan
The Bus Reshaping Plan of 1966 was a plan devised by the London Transport Board for the reorganisation of bus routes in London, England. The main features of the plan, which was to be rolled out over ten to fifteen years, were: * Introduction of one man operation (OMO) to address staff shortages and costs * Introduction of flat fare routes centred on outer hubs * A shortening of routes to improve reliability and ease scheduling * Long single deckers in place of double-deckers The plan began to be implemented in September 1968, but immediately proved problematic: the public disliked the changes, the new vehicles - "Merlin"s - were found to be unsuitable, and it was difficult to find available land for the proposed suburban transport interchanges. By 1973 the plan had effectively been abandoned, with a decision to retain crew operation and to dispose of the Merlins. London Transport Board
The London Transport Board was the organisation responsible for public transport (except main-line trains) in London, England, and its environs from 1963 to 1969. In common with all London transport authorities from 1933 to 2000, the public name and operational brand of the organisation was London Transport. History The London Transport Board (LTB) was established on 1 January 1963 pursuant to the Transport Act 1962 and replaced the London Transport Executive (LTE) upon the dissolution of the British Transport Commission. Henry Phelps Brown
Sir Ernest Henry Phelps Brown MBE, FBA (10 February 1906 – 15 December 1994) was a prominent British economist. Early years Phelps Brown was born in Calne, Wiltshire.. He won a scholarship to The Taunton Academy before winning an open scholarship to Wadham College at Oxford University to study first history, and then philosophy, politics & economics. Anthony Bull CBE CStJ (18 July 1908 – 23 December 2004) was a British transport engineer and was president of the Institute of Transport. Background and education The son of Sir William James Bull, MP (1863–1931), who was created a Baronet in 1922, and his wife Lillian Hester Brandon, Anthony Bull was educated at Gresham's School, Holt (1922–1926), and Magdalene College, Cambridge (1926–1929). Maurice Holmes (barrister)
Sir Maurice Andrew Holmes (28 July 1911 – 21 December 1997) was a barrister and Chairman of the London Transport Board from 1965 to 1969. Holmes attended Felsted School, Essex. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Army Service Corps from 1941 to 1945, achieving the rank of Major. After the war, he was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1948 where he practised until 1955. In 1955, he became a director of Tillings Association Limited and then chairman in 1960, a post he held until 1965 when he became Chairman of the London Transport Board which controlled the London Underground and London's buses.
