Burren, County Down
Burren () is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is near Warrenpoint. It is not to be confused with the Burren area in County Clare. Places of interest Burren Heritage Centre is a converted national school at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, telling the story of the area. In the year 1927, Tamnaharry Park became a convent when the (Irish) Dominican Sisters of South Africa purchased the property. The new Convent Chapel of Our Lady of the Assumption was dedicated, and its high altar consecrated, by Bishop Mulhern on 24 May 1939. Dr P. Clery, O.P., Dean of Dublin, preached the dedication sermon. By 1945, the Sisters had acquired a new novitiate in County Kildare and were succeeded in Tamnaharry by the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition. The house remained in religious hands until 1969, when the Morton Family of Banbridge bought it. Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football tournament which began in season 1970–71. It is the top-tier competition for the senior football clubs of Ireland and London. The current champions are Kilcoo of Down who defeated Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin on 12 February 2022 to win their first title. The current trophy is the Andy Merrigan Cup, named after a footballer who played for Castletown Liam Mellows and Wexford who died as a result of a farm accident at the height of his playing career. Ulster Senior Club Football Championship
The Ulster Senior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition played between the top clubs in Ulster GAA. The trophy awarded to the winners is the Seamus McFerran Cup ( ga, Corn Shéamuis Mhic Fearáin). The winners and the Connacht, Leinster, Munster and London champions compete in the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. Glen are the current champions, having beaten Kilcoo in the 2022 final. Crossmaglen Rangers from Armagh have won the most titles with eleven wins. Down Senior Club Football Championship
The Down Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by top-tier Down GAA clubs. The Down County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1903. Kilcoo are the title holders (2022) defeating Warrenpoint in the Final. History Since the turn of the Millennium, the competition and Down football has largely been dominated by the "Big Three", with 21 of the 23 titles being shared by Kilcoo (11 titles), Mayobridge (7) and Burren (St Mary's) (3). Kevin McKernan
Kevin McKernan (born 3 December 1987) is a Gaelic footballer from County Down, Northern Ireland. He plays for the Down senior inter-county football team. Playing career Inter-county McKernan has been a member of the Down team since 2008 but made his debut in 2007. He also plays Midfield or Half Forward. He started at centre back in 2010, in which Down lost 0-15 to 0-16 to Cork. Kevin won a Dr McKenna Cup in 2008 scoring 1 point from play he won an Ulster Under-21 Football Championship in 2008 beating Derry 3-11 to 1-14. Paddy O'Rourke (born 1960 in Burren, County Down) is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player. James McCartan is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player who played at senior level for the Down county team between 1990 and 2000. McCartan was part of the Down team that won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 1991 and 1994. McCartan also won two Ulster Senior Football Championships with the county. At underage level McCartan won Ulster Minor and All-Ireland Minor Football Championship medals. He also won two All Star awards during his career. McCartan usually played as a corner forward. He was renowned for his speed, swerving runs at the defence and scoring ability. McCartan is regarded as one of the Down's best ever footballers. Declan Rooney (born 1983/1984) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who played in the 2010 All-Ireland Final. He is a defender. A Burren stalwart, he won a Down Senior Football Championship medal in 2010 when his club won that competition for the first since 1997.
