Farmington is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,061 at the 2010 census, up from 1,733 at the 2000 census. It is part of the La Crosse Metropolitan Statistical Area. The unincorporated communities of Burr Oak, Mindoro, and Stevenstown are in the town. Geography Farmington is along the northern edge of La Crosse County, bordered to the north by Trempealeau, Jackson, and Monroe counties. Mindoro, the largest community, is in the center of the town, in the valley of Fleming Creek, also known as Lewis Valley. Wisconsin Highway 108 crosses the east-central part of town, leading north to Melrose and south the same distance to West Salem. Mindoro Cut
Mindoro Cut is a cut in the Town of Farmington in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, which carries County Trunk Highway C through Phillips Ridge, linking Mindoro with West Salem. The cut is deep, long, and wide; it is the second-deepest cut built by hand in the Western Hemisphere and the oldest functional cut which has not been improved upon. Work on the cut began in 1907 and concluded in 1908; the project was completed primarily with hand tools. The Mindoro Cut was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. History Mindoro farmers and La Crosse County officials commissioned the Mindoro Cut as part of the Good Roads Movement, linking a creamery in Mindoro with a railroad station in West Salem. West Salem is a village in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States, along the La Crosse River. It is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,799 as of the 2010 Census. History West Salem was platted in 1856. It was named Salem by a Baptist minister named Elder Card because the word meant "peace" in Arabic and Hebrew. The word West was added to the name when mail was confused with another town in the state named Salem. The donation of approximately ten acres of land to a railway company led to the creation of West Salem. A station was built in West Salem on the original Milwaukee and La Crosse Railway which ran to La Crosse. State Trunk Highway 108 (often called Highway 108, STH-108 or WIS 108) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.
