George Burnham
George Burnham (December 28, 1868 – June 28, 1939) was a banker and Republican politician from San Diego, California. He served two terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1933 to 1937. Biography Burnham was born 1868 in London, England, to James and Maria Ann Burnham. He immigrated in 1881 to the United States with his parents, who settled in Spring Valley, Minnesota. He attended public schools in London and Minnesota. Burnham worked as a clerk 1884–1886, then moved to Jackson, Minnesota, in 1887 where he entered the retail shoe business. In 1901 he moved to Spokane, Washington, and worked in real estate and ranching. Robert Burnham Jr. (June 16, 1931 – March 20, 1993) was an American astronomer, best known for writing the classic three-volume ''Burnham's Celestial Handbook''. He is the discoverer of numerous asteroids including the Mars crossing asteroid 3397 Leyla, as well as six comets. Burnham's late years were tragic; he died destitute and alone. However, he is remembered by a generation of deep sky observers for his unique contribution to astronomy, the ''Celestial Handbook.'' The main-belt asteroid 3467 Bernheim was named in his honor. Linda Burnham (born 1948) is an American journalist, activist, and leader in women's rights movements, particularly with organizations and projects serving and advocating for women of color. Early life and family Burnham was born in 1948, to parents who were active in the Young Communist League, and then the Southern Negro Youth Congress, in the 1930s and 1940s. Her father was Louis E. Burnham, an activist and journalist. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated from Reed College in 1968. Career As a journalist and political activist, Burnham has been a leader and member with the Venceremos Brigade, the Third World Women's Alliance, the Alliance Against Women's Oppression, the Angela Davis Defense Committee, and the Line of March. Life and career Burnham began in the 1950s as an actor and appeared in many popular British TV series such as '' The Avengers'', ''The Saint'' and ''Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)'' in 1969. In the mid-1970s he retired from acting and concentrated on screenwriting. With Trevor Ray, he co-authored the fondly-remembered children's science fiction horror serial ''Children of the Stones'' (1977). A novelization followed, also in 1977. Lt. Howard Mather Burnham (March 17, 1842 – September 19, 1863), is best known for having fought and died at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia (U.S. state), Georgia, during the American Civil War.
