The Breaka Burleigh Pro is a surfing competition which has been held annually since 2010 in February at Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia. It is sponsored by Breaka Flavoured Milk. It features an Association of Surfing Professionals 6-Star rated Women's event and a 4-Star Men's event. In the 2010 Men's event, Taj Burrow took the championship, and he won again in 2011. Julian Wilson won in 2012. Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer (or two in tandem surfing), uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Burleigh Heads is a suburb in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. In the , Burleigh Heads had a population of 10,077 people. The World Surf League (WSL) is the governing body for professional surfers and is dedicated to showcasing the world's best talent in a variety of progressive formats. The World Surf League was originally known as the International Professional Surfing founded by Fred Hemmings and Randy Rarick in 1976. IPS created the first world circuit of pro surfing events. In 1983 the Association of Surfing Pros took over management of the world circuit. In 2013, the ASP was acquired by ZoSea, backed by Paul Speaker, Terry Hardy, and Dirk Ziff. Taj Burrow
Taj Burrow (born 2 June 1978) is an Australian retired professional surfer. Taj retired from the WSL World Tour in June 2016 where he left a legacy of power and impressive surfing. Early life Burrow was born in Yallingup, Western Australia, Australia to American parents and began surfing at age 7. Career In 1998 he qualified for the ASP World Tour at the age of 18 years, becoming the youngest surfer to ever win a national title. Burrow had already earned a place on the world tour a year earlier, but he turned it down stating that, as a 17-year-old, he was "too young to do the tour full-on". Julian Wilson (born 8 November 1988) is an Australian professional surfer who competes on the World Surf League Men's World Tour. Personal life Wilson was born and raised in Coolum Beach, Queensland. He is an ambassador for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Wilson's mother is a breast cancer survivor, and he was inspired to ride a pink board by a close family friend and international cricketer, Matthew Hayden, who plays with a pink bat for the corresponding cause. Wilson was in the water during the final of the J-Bay Open 2015 in South Africa when three-time world champion Mick Fanning was attacked by a great white shark. Owen Wright (surfer)
Owen Wright (born 16 January 1990) is an Australian professional surfer on the World Surf League (formerly the Association of Surfing Professionals) Men's Championship Tour. His sister, Tyler Wright (surfer), Tyler Wright, is also a competitor on the World Surf League Championship Tour. In the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, Olympics Wright Owen Wright battled Brazil, past injury and rough seas to take Australia's first surfing Olympic bronze medal. Just being named in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team was one of the great comebacks in Australian sport after his bad experience in Hawaii in late 2015. Sally Jayne Fitzgibbons (born 19 December 1990) is an Australian professional surfer on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour (2009–2013). In June 2019, she was ranked No. 1 in the world for women's surfing after winning the Rio Pro. Sally now competes on the second tier challenger series after failing to qualify for the WSL top 10 at the 2022 mid-season cut. Surfing career Fitzgibbons was born in Gerroa, New South Wales.
