Burgwedel is a town in the district of Hanover, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km northeast of Hanover. It has a population of around 20,200. Großburgwedel
Großburgwedel is a village northeast of Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany. Formerly an independent municipality, it is part of the town Burgwedel since 1974. Großburgwedel is home to the town hall of Burgwedel and other town institutions such as the library, a hospital for the region of Hanover. It also has a grammar school, secondary school, secondary modern school and special needs school, as well as a builder's yard and open air swimming pool. Hanover (district)
Hanover Region (german: Region Hannover) is a district in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is bounded by (from the north and clockwise) the districts of Heidekreis, Celle, Gifhorn, Peine, Hildesheim, Hamelin-Pyrmont, Schaumburg and Nienburg. The Hanover Region district has a unique legal status among the districts of Lower Saxony. It includes the city of Hanover (the state capital) which has the same privileges as a city that is not part of a district. Kleinburgwedel (Low German: ''Littjen Borwee'') is a village and northeastern lying district of the city Burgwedel in the region Hannover in Lower Saxony. History In the Middle Ages Kleinburgwedel, together with Großburgwedel, Oldhorst, Neuwarmbüchen and Fuhrberg, formed the Burgwedel parish. Despite the many war costs, Duke Wilhelm found means to buy goods. On January 6, 1361, he and Duke Ludwig von Aschwin von Alten acquired many yards and lodges at Kleinburgwedel, Thönse, Wettmar, Engensen, Schillerslage, Burgdorf, Sorgensen, Weferlingsen and Aligse with all accessories, except those pieces which Aschwin von Alten had borrowed and reserved for sale. Carl Von Alten
Field Marshal Sir Charles (Carl) August von Alten (21 October 1764 – 20 April 1840) was a Hanoverian and British soldier who led the famous Light Division during the last two years of the Peninsular War. At the Battle of Waterloo, he commanded a division in the front line, where he was wounded. He later rose to the rank of Field Marshal in the Hanoverian army. Alten was the son of August Eberhard von Alten (1722–1789), a member of an old Hanoverian family, and Baroness Henriette Philippine Marie Hedwig von Vincke-Ostenwalde. Alten's older brother, Victor Alten (1755–1820) commanded a cavalry brigade in Wellington's army. Unlike his brother Charles, Victor is described as "unsatisfactory". Otto Wöhler
Otto Wöhler (12 July 1894 – 5 February 1987) was a German general in the Wehrmacht and a war criminal during World War II. He rose to a corps and army level commander. Wöhler was implicated in the Einsatzgruppe activities while serving as Chief of Staff of the 11th Army in early 1942. After the war, he was convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the High Command trial and sentenced to 8 years. He was released in February 1951. World War II Wöhler fought in World War I and served in the post-war Reichswehr and in then the Wehrmacht in several staff roles. Between October 1940 and May 1942, Wöhler served as chief of staff of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein's 11th Army. In this capacity Wöhler cooperated closely with the Einsatzgruppe D under Otto Ohlendorf. At one point, he requested that all watches belonging to the killed Jews be turned over to the army.
