Bundesstraße 185
The Bundesstraße 185 (abbreviation: B 185) is a German federal road or ''Bundesstraße'' in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. It runs from east to west connecting the town of Dessau-Roßlau with the Harz mountain region. Between Kleinpaschleben and Dessau-Roßlau the B 185 is part of the German Avenue Road. History The present Bundesstraße 185 links the most important ''Residenz'' towns of the former Principality of Anhalt. Only the section between Aschersleben and Ermsleben lay on Prussian territory. This section was known as Prussian State Road No. 90a (''preußische Staatschaussee Nr. 90a'') which was completed in 1842. The 64.7 km long '' Reichsstraße 185'' between Dessau and Aschersleben was built around 1937. ''Bundesstraße'' (German for "federal highway"), abbreviated ''B'', is the denotation for German and Austrian national highways. Germany Germany's ''Bundesstraßen'' network has a total length of about 40,000 km. German ''Bundesstraßen'' are labelled with rectangular yellow signs with black numerals, as opposed to the white-on-blue markers of the ''Autobahn'' controlled-access highways. Falkenstein/Harz
Falkenstein/Harz is a town in the Harz district, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It was created in 2002 by merging the town of Ermsleben with the former municipalities of Endorf, Meisdorf, Neuplatendorf, Pansfelde, Reinstedt und Wieserode. The new community was named after Falkenstein Castle. Geography The town is situated on the northeastern edge of the Harz mountain range, about west of Aschersleben. Ballenstedt
Ballenstedt is a town in the Harz district, in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Geography It is situated at the northern rim of the Harz mountain range, about 10 km (6 mi) southeast of Quedlinburg. The municipal area comprises the villages of Asmusstedt, Badeborn, Opperode, Radisleben, and Rieder. Ballenstedt is a stop on the scenic Romanesque Road. History The Saxon count Esico of Ballenstedt (c. 1000–1059/60) was mentioned in a 1030 entry in the medieval chronicles of the Annalista Saxo and in a 1036 deed issued by Emperor Conrad II. Selke Valley Railway
The Selke Valley Railway (''Selketalbahn''), ''Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway'' (''Gernroder-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn'') and the ''Anhalt Harz Railway'' (''Anhaltische Harzbahn'') were different names for the metre gauge railway in the Lower Harz, Germany, originally owned by the Gernrode-Harzgerode Railway Company (''Gernrode-Harzgeroder Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft'', GHE). It is now only known as the ''Selke Valley Railway''. This has included the Quedlinburg–Gernrode line since 2006. Alexisbad
Alexisbad is a small spa town, part of Harzgerode in the district of Harz, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Geography Alexisbad is located about northwest of the Harzgerode town centre on the Bundesstrasse 185 road to Ballenstedt. It is situated in the valley of the Selke river and its Schwefelbach and Friedenstalbach tributaries, in the lower eastern outskirts of the Harz mountain range, about above sea level. The settlement is surrounded by the Harz/Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park. In earlier years, the spa town was known for its medicinal waters, of which the Alexisbrunnen, an iron-rich spring, is used for drinking water, while the Selkebrunnen supplies the baths.
