Bundesautobahn 20
is an autobahn in Germany. It is colloquially known as Ostseeautobahn ("Baltic Freeway") or Küstenautobahn ("Coastal Freeway") due to its geographic location near the Baltic Sea coastline. The road is not built along a straight line, instead it is built near important cities (Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund), to make it more beneficial for travel between these cities, and also to serve as bypass. Construction started in 1992, only two years after the German reunification, near the junction Wismar-Nord and was completed in December 2005, when the last section was opened near Tribsees by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Building costs are estimated at € 1.8 billion. 279 km of the autobahn are in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, 27 km in Brandenburg and 30 km in Schleswig-Holstein, making the A 20 the longest continuously built new autobahn since 1945. is an autobahn in northwestern Germany. Construction of a first, section started 2002 and was opened on 23 October 2008. Opened section The first section between Stade and Horneburg started construction in 2002. It was opened gradually between 5 August and 23 October 2008. Part of the second section connecting Horneburg with Jork was finished mid 2014 but open only to west bound motor bikes and passenger cars since 28 November 2014 and east bound since 17 July 2015. Elbe Crossing
The Elbe crossing (german: Elbquerung) is a planned fixed transport link across the lower Elbe between Hamburg and the North Sea. The crossing is expected to enable the westward extension of the coastal Bundesautobahn 20 to join Bundesautobahn 26 and on to Bremerhaven and the Weser tunnel. The link is planned to cross the Elbe between Glückstadt in Schleswig-Holstein and Drochtersen in Lower Saxony, to form part of the North West Bypass of Hamburg and improve the road connections along the Amsterdam–Copenhagen transport corridor. This is a joint project of the states of Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein. The crossing is proposed to be a tunnel under the Elbe, and is expected to cost about 1.3 billion euros.
