Bulimba is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Bulimba had a population of 6,843 people. Geography Bulimba is located north-east of the CBD on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, but it is by road. Toponymy Bulimba is reportedly a Yugarapul word used meaning 'place of the magpie lark'. The same word is the origin of the nearby Bulimba Creek, and of the Bulimba Reach on which the suburb is located. The leader, Bilin Bilin, has his name based upon the magpie lark, or the pee-wee. History Bulimba was originally inhabited by the Yuggara people, who have lived in the area for at least 20,000 years. In the 1820s, Bulimba was called Toogoolawah and was settled as a farming district, with residential subdivision commencing in the 1880s land boom. In 1862, a Baptist church opened in Bulimba. Bulimba House
Bulimba House is a heritage-listed detached house at 34 Kenbury Street, Bulimba, Queensland, Australia. It was designed and built by Andrew Petrie from 1849 to 1850. It is also known as Toogoolawah. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. A number of timber cottages were constructed around the main house. History Bulimba House was erected in 1849-50 for early Queensland pastoralists David and Mary McConnel. David had established Cressbrook in the Brisbane Valley in 1841, the second run in the Moreton Bay district of New South Wales. In mid-1849 he purchased of land on the angle of the Brisbane River approximately five miles downstream from Brisbane Town. The subtropical rainforest area was known to the local Aborigines as Tugulawa or Toogoolawah, meaning "shape of heart". Bulimba Reach is a reach of the Brisbane River in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Geography Bulimba Reach flows from south (upstream) to north (downstream). The suburbs of Hawthorne and Bulimba are on its eastern bank. The suburbs of New Farm, Teneriffe and Newstead lie to the west. Breakfast Creek joins the Brisbane River from the north-east at the northern end of Bulimba Reach. Bulimba is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. The electorate covers the inner eastern suburbs of Brisbane. It is bounded on the north and the west by the Brisbane River and, as at the 2009 election, covers the suburbs of Bulimba, Balmoral, Cannon Hill, Hawthorne, Morningside, Norman Park, Murarrie and Seven Hills. Hawthorne is a suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Hawthorne had a population of 4,989 people. Geography Hawthorne is located by road east of the CBD. Toponymy There are two theories about the name of the suburb. One is that butcher William Baynes purchased land in the area in 1875 and named the area after Hawthorn in Melbourne where he lived before his arrival in Queensland in 1859. An alternative theory is that Baynes planted many hawthorne bushes in the 1850s and 1860s. History Hawthorne started as a farming district in the 1860s, and was gradually subdivided as Brisbane grew. Teneriffe, Queensland
Teneriffe is an inner suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, north-east of the CBD. In the , Teneriffe had a population of 5,335 people. Teneriffe was once an important wool trading hub and was the location of Australia's largest submarine base in World War II. The suburb was absorbed into Newstead in 1975, but re-established as a separate suburb in 2010. Brisbane River
The Brisbane River is the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane, before emptying into Moreton Bay on the Coral Sea. Morningside is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Morningside had a population of 10,481. Geography It is located east of the CBD, and borders Cannon Hill, Norman Park, Seven Hills, Balmoral, and Hawthorne.
