Bulgarian People's Union
The Bulgarian People's Union ( bg, Български народен съюз) was a centre-right electoral alliance in Bulgaria. It contested only one legislative election: that on 25 June 2005. It won 5.7% of the popular vote and 13 out of 240 seats. Stefan Sofiyanski
Stefan Antonov Sofiyanski ( bg, Стефан Антонов Софиянски ) (born November 7, 1951) is a Bulgarian politician who served as interim Prime Minister of Bulgaria in 1997 and was a three-term Mayor of Sofia. He was a leading member of the Union of Democratic Forces. Sofiyanski was born in Sofia in 1951. He was a statistics graduate from the Karl Marx Higher Institute of Economics and held a number of positions in the Ministry of Communications and Information during communist rule. He served in the cabinet of Filip Dimitrov and became one of the leading members of the UDF. He was elected Mayor of Sofia in 1995 and served in this position, being re-elected twice - in 1999 and 2003, until 2005 when he resigned to become a parliamentary deputy. He was appointed as caretaker Prime Minister by President Petar Stoyanov in 1997 until such time as Ivan Kostov could form a government. The Agrarian People's Union ( bg, Земеделски народен съюз, Zemedelski naroden sajuz; ZNS), until 2006 known as the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union – People's Union (''Balgarski Zemedelski Naroden Sajuz – Naroden Sajuz'', BZNS-NS), is a conservative agrarian party in Bulgaria. It was founded in 1996 by a faction of the Bulgarian Agrarian People's Union led by Anastasia Dimitrova-Moser. It contested the parliamentary election in 1997 and 2001 within the center-right United Democratic Forces. 2005 Bulgarian Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Bulgaria on 25 June 2005, for the 240 members of the National Assembly. According to exit polls, the Socialists had a lead with around 31%, but without a majority, necessitating the creation of a coalition. The National Movement for Simeon II, in power before the election, was in second place, with around 21%. Following the election, Socialist Party leader Sergei Stanishev became Prime Minister. At least 6,000 candidates (from 22 parties) ran for election to the 240 member parliament. The turnout of 56% was the lowest on record. 4% of the votes are needed to gain a seat. The opposition led the election, but did not gain an outright majority. Sergei Stanishev, leader of the socialist party, stated he would attempt to form a governing coalition.
