Bulgarian Jews In Israel
Bulgarian Jews in Israel are Jewish immigrants and descendants of the immigrants of the Bulgarian Jewish communities, who now reside within the state of Israel. They number around 75,000 in the wider definition, and 7,500 in the narrower scope (those with Bulgarian citizenship). History After the establishment of the state of Israel, most of the Bulgarian Jewish population left for Israel, leaving only about a thousand Bulgarian Jews living in Bulgaria today (1,162 according to the 2011 census). According to Israeli government statistics, 43,961 people from Bulgaria emigrated to Israel between 1948 and 2006, making Bulgarian Jews in Israel the fourth largest group to come from a European country, after the Soviet Union, Romania and Poland. Jerusalem
Jerusalem (; he, יְרוּשָׁלַיִם ; ar, القُدس ) (combining the Biblical and common usage Arabic names); grc, Ἱερουσαλήμ/Ἰεροσόλυμα, Hierousalḗm/Hierosóluma; hy, Երուսաղեմ, Erusałēm. is a city in Western Asia. Albert Cohen (actor)
Albert Cohen ( he, אלברט כהן; born June 9, 1932) is an Israeli actor, voice actor, theatre director, singer and accordionist. Biography Albert Cohen was born in Sofia to a Bulgarian Jewish family. He attended the National Academy of Music and played at Sofia's National Theatre. In 1949, Cohen and his family immigrated to Israel. Cohen married twice. His first wife, Ruth Menza, a pianist for the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, died from multiple sclerosis in 1988. They had two sons, Ady, a composer, and Sharon, a voice actor and translator. His granddaughter Lenny is also an actress. Cohen's second wife, Da'at Levontin, who he married in the early 1990s, is also a pianist. Cohen has resided in Ramat Gan since 1960. Avraham Ofek
Avraham Ofek ( he, אברהם אופק; August 14, 1935 – January 13, 1990) was a multidisciplinary Israeli artist. Biography Avraham Ofek was born in Burgas, Bulgaria. Within two years of the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, 45000 of Bulgaria’s 50000 Jews left voluntarily for Israel, including fourteen-year-old Avraham Ofek. Ya'akov Nitzani
Ya'akov Nitzani ( he, יעקב ניצני, born Ya'akov Chechik; 6 December 1900 – 15 September 1962) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai from 1952 until 1959. Biography Born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to a Sephardic Jewish family, Nitzani studied law at the University of Sofia, and also attended a Hebrew teachers seminary. He worked as a teacher from 1920 until 1925, and was a founder of the Organisation for Hebrew Language and Culture. He also helped establish the Bulgarian branches of Hashomer Hatzair and Poale Zion, and was secretary general of the Zionist Organisation in the country. In 1935, he made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine, and became secretary of the Histadrut's Mizrahi Jews department, as well as becoming a member of the trade union's executive committee and the Tel Aviv Workers Council. Ya'akov Nehoshtan
Ya'akov Nehoshtan ( he, יעקב נחושתן; 22 April 1925 – 17 April 2019) was an Israeli politician and diplomat. He served as a member of the Knesset for Gahal between 1969 and 1974 and as ambassador to the Netherlands between 1982 and 1985. Biography Born in Kazanlak, Bulgaria, Nehoshtan attended high school in Vratsa and was a member of the Hashomer Hatzair youth group. He made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1944, and studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, gaining certification as a lawyer. He joined the Irgun in 1944, and was arrested by the British authorities the following year and exiled to a detention camp in Eritrea. In 1947 he was moved to a camp in Kenya. In 1948 he was amongst the founders of Herut. He became chairman of the party's Jerusalem branch in 1968, and the following year was elected to the Knesset on the Gahal list (an alliance of Herut and the Liberal Party). Moni Moshonov
Shlomo "Moni" Moshonov ( he, שלמה "מוני" מושונוב; born 18 August 1951) is an Israeli actor, comedian, and theater director. Early and personal life Moshonov was born in Ramla, Israel, to a Sephardic Jewish family that immigrated to Israel from Sofia, Bulgaria. Raphael Mechoulam ( he, רפאל משולם, bg, Рафаел Мешулам; born 5 November 1930) is an Israeli organic chemist and professor of Medicinal Chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. Shmuel Levi
Shmuel Levi ( he, שמואל לוי; March 14, 1884 – July 1966) was an Israeli painter. Biography Shmuel Levi (Ophel) was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. The name Opal was added by him as a pen name, yet at some point Levi abandoned it. His artwork stressed the Orientalism, Orientalist style especially seen by the Yemenite Jews. His parents were Abraham and Naomi Levi. After completing his studies in gymnasia, he began his studies at the National Academy of Arts, Sofia. With the establishment of the Bezalel Academy in 1906, Levi immigrated to the Land of Israel at the invitation of Boris Schatz. While at the Academy, Levi organized the first choir at Bezalel. Levi spoke of the praise he was given as well as the financial reward which resulted from his exhibition in Russian Empire, Czarist Russia. Shabtai Konorti
Shabtai Konorti ( he, שבתאי קונורטי; December 13, 1943 – May 27, 2002) was an Israeli actor. Biography Born in Bulgaria, Konorti moved to Israel with his family at the age of six. He studied at the Municipal High School in Tel Aviv before serving in the IDF. He then went on to study acting at the Nissan Nativ Acting Studio. Konorti took an interest in stage acting and he was one of the people involved in the creation of the Jerusalem Khan Theatre. He also worked at the Ohel Theatre and the Habima Theatre where he starred in stage adaptations of ''Man Equals Man'', ''The Government Inspector'' and more. Biography Kotler, born Levi, comes from a Sephardi family from Bulgaria which spoke Ladino. She has written several books about her heritage.
