Biography Early life: 1871–1898 Sergei Nikolaevich Bulgakov was born on 16 July 1871 to the family of an Orthodox priest (Nikolai Bulgakov) in the town of Livny, Oryol guberniya, in Russia. The family produced Orthodox priests for six generations, beginning in the sixteenth century with their ancestor Bulgak, a Tatar from whom the family name derives. Metropolitan Macarius Bulgakov (1816–1882), one of the major Eastern Orthodox theologians of his days, and one of the most important Russian church historians, was a distant relative. Valentin Fyodorovich Bulgakov (russian: Валентин Фёдорович Булгаков; 25 November 1886 in Kuznetsk, Russian Empire – 22 September 1966 in Yasnaya Polyana, Tula Oblast, Soviet Union) was the last secretary of Leo Tolstoy and his biographer. He was director of a number of literary museums and was engaged in Tolstoyan, pacifist activities. He was imprisoned by the Tsarist regime and in a Nazi internment camp. Konstantin Yakovlevich Bulgakov (russian: Константин Яковлевич Булгаков; 31 December 178229 October 1835) was a diplomat, privy councillor, and postal administrator from the Russian Empire. Konstantin Bulgakov served as the Director of the Moscow Post Office. Since 1819 he was the Director of Saint Petersburg Post Office. Bulgakov later became the Director of the Postal Department of the Russian Empire. Alexander Yakovlevich Bulgakov (russian: Александр Яковлевич Булгаков; 15 November 178117 April 1863) was a Russian diplomat, senator, and postal administrator. Biography Alexander Bulgakov was born in 1781 in Constantinople in the family of a Russian diplomat, Yakov Bulgakov (1743–1809). At the beginning of his career, Bulgakov worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as an official with special duties attached to the Governor General of Moscow in 1809–1832. Dmitry Vitalyevich Bulgakov (Russian: Дмитрий Витальевич Булгаков; born 20 October 1954) is a Russian military leader, a specialist in the field of logistic support of the armed forces. Yakov Ivanovich Bulgakov ( Russian: ''Яков Иванович Булгаков''; 15 October 1743 – 7 July 1809) was a Russian diplomat best remembered as Catherine II's emissary in Constantinople in the 1780s. Of noble parentage, Bulgakov attended the gymnasium of the newly founded Moscow University. His class fellows included Ippolit Bogdanovich, Denis Fonvizin, and Grigory Potemkin. Duke Yuri Mikhailovich Bulgakov-Golitsyn () was a governor of Pskov province and Russian ambassador to Hungary in the 16th century. Bulgakov came from a princely family which had roots in Ingria, eastern Finland, and Pskov region. He died in Pskov. Career He was governor (or viceroy) of two important provinces: Pskov and Novgorod. In 1550 he was ambassador to Hungary. According to documents contemporary with him, he was not known with the byname Golitsin but Bulgakov (from Kovalenko) and it was his sons who were the first generation to use byname Golitsin (according to Ikonnikov). Metropolitan Macarius (russian: link=no, Митрополи́т Мака́рий, born Mikhail Petrovich Bulgakov, russian: link=no, Михаи́л Петро́вич Булга́ков; –), was the Metropolitan of Moscow and Kolomna in 1879–82 and member of many learned societies, including the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 1841, he graduated from the Kiev Theological Academy, of which he served as a dean in 1851–57. His popular student manual, ''Orthodox Dogmatic Theology'', steeped in the Latin methodology, was originally printed in 6 volumes in 1847–53.
