Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency
Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency () is a defunct five-member Group Representation Constituency located in the western area of Singapore. It consists of largely Bukit Timah areas, and including parts of Jurong, Clementi and Bukit Batok areas as well. The GRC has only appeared once in 1997 which the ruling party, People's Action Party received a walkover on the nomination day, which is similar to Kreta Ayer–Tanglin GRC's fate. It was headed by Minister in Prime Minister's Office Lim Boon Heng Lim Boon Heng (; born 18 November 1947) is a Singaporean former politician. Bukit Timah Single Member Constituency (SMC) was a single member constituency in Bukit Timah, Singapore. It was formerly known as Bukit Timah Constituency before 1988. History In 1951, Rural West Constituency was broken up into Bukit Timah constituency and Seletar constituency . In 1955, the constituency was broken up to form various constituencies, Bukit Panjang, Pasir Panjang, Queenstown, Sembawang and Southern Islands SMC. In 1959, it was further broken up to form Jurong SMC. In 1972, the constituency was broken up to form Bukit Batok SMC, followed by in 1980 distributed to Ayer Rajah SMC, Clementi SMC and West Coast SMC with the growing development of Clementi, and in 1984 to Yuhua SMC and Hong Kah SMC with the growing development of Jurong East. Ong Chit Chung
Ong Chit Chung (; 28 January 1949 – 14 July 2008) was a Singaporean politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency (GRC) from May 1997 to October 2001 and Jurong GRC from March 2002 till his death in July 2008. He was also a military historian at the National University of Singapore. Career Entering politics in 1988, Ong served the Bukit Batok Constituency for two terms, before the constituency became part of the Bukit Timah Group Representation Constituency in 1996, and the constituency becoming a part of the Jurong Group Representation Constituency in 2001. Yu-Foo Yee Shoon
Yu-Foo Yee Shoon (; born 17 February 1950) is a former Singaporean politician. A member of the country's governing People's Action Party (PAP), she served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1984 to 2011. Her political appointments included Mayor of South West District of Singapore and Minister of State at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports. 1997 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 2 January 1997. President Ong Teng Cheong dissolved parliament on 16 December 1996 on the advice of Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. The election results were released in the late evening that day and the ruling People's Action Party won a total of 81 out of 83 seats as well as a tenth consecutive term in office under the then-Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. Other major political parties contesting in the election were the Workers' Party, Singapore Democratic Party, National Solidarity Party, Singapore People's Party and the Democratic Progressive Party. Lim Boon Heng
Lim Boon Heng (; born 18 November 1947) is a Singaporean former politician. A former member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he was a Member of Parliament (MP) between 1980 and 2011, and had served in the Cabinet between 2001 and 2011. He also served as Chairman of the People's Action Party between 2004 and 2011. Lim had also served as Chairman of NTUC Enterprise Co-operative, Deputy Chairman of the Singapore Labour Foundation, Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) and Deputy Chairman of the People's Association.
