Buchanan-Jardine Baronets
The Jardine, later Buchanan-Jardine Baronetcy, of Castle Milk in the County of Dumfries, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 20 July 1885 for the businessman and Liberal politician Robert Jardine. He was head of Jardine, Matheson and Co, merchants in China, and also represented Ashburton, Dumfries and Dumfriesshire in Parliament. Jardine married Margaret, daughter of John Buchanan Hamilton and sister and heiress of John Hamilton-Buchanan, Chief of Clan Buchanan. The second and third Baronets were also heads of Jardine, Matheson and Co. The latter assumed the additional surname of Buchanan. Baronetage Of The United Kingdom
Baronets are a rank in the British aristocracy. The current Baronetage of the United Kingdom has replaced the earlier but existing Baronetages of England, Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Great Britain. Baronetage of England (1611–1705) James I of England, King James I created the hereditary Order of Baronets in England on 22 May 1611, for the settlement of Ireland. He offered the dignity to 200 gentlemen of good birth, with a clear estate of Pound sterling, £1,000 a year, on condition that each one should pay a sum equivalent to three years' pay to 30 soldiers at 8d per day per man (total – £1,095) into the King's Exchequer. Sir Robert Jardine, 1st Baronet (24 May 1825 – 17 February 1905) was a Scottish businessman and Liberal politician. Life Jardine was born at Edinburgh the son of David Jardine of Muir House, Lockerbie, Dumfries and his wife Rachel Johnstone. In 1865 he became head of Jardine, Matheson and Co., one of the largest Far East trading houses based in Hong Kong. At the general election in July 1865, Jardine was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashburton in Devon where his uncle William Jardine had been an earlier MP. The Ashburton constituency was abolished at the 1868 general election and he was elected instead at Dumfries Burghs. Ashburton was a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament at Westminster, for the Parliaments of 1295 and 1407, and regularly from 1640 until it was abolished for the 1868 general election. It was one of three Devon borough constituencies newly enfranchised (or re-enfranchised after a gap of centuries) in the Long Parliament. Buchanan Baronets
There have been two baronetcies created for persons with the surname Buchanan, both in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. The Buchanan Baronetcy, of Dunburgh in the County of Stirling, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on 14 December 1878 for the diplomat Sir Andrew Buchanan, GCB. He was British Ambassador to Russia from 1864 to 1867 and to Austria from 1871 to 1878. His eldest son, the second Baronet, died childless in 1901. He was succeeded by his younger brother, the third Baronet. His son, the fourth Baronet, was a Justice of the Peace, Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff for Nottinghamshire.
