Brycheiniog (journal)
''Brycheiniog'' is an annual historical and archaeological academic journal published by the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends, covering Brecknockshire (modern Powys; the old kingdom of Brycheiniog) in Wales. The journal was established in 1955 and has been well received. ''Museums Journal'' wrote of the early editions, "The geological history of Brecknock was written for the first volume," and that became the foundation for the historical and archaeological work that followed. A few years later, Glanmor Williams, editor of the ''Welsh History Review'', published an article that praised "the high academic standards of the journal since it first appeared in 1955" and noted it is "lavishly illustrated with photographs, diagrams, and tables." The journal has been digitized by the Welsh Journals Online project at the National Library of Wales. Brecknock Society And Museum Friends
Brecknock Society and Museum Friends ( cy, Cymdeithas Brycheiniog a Chyfeillion yr Amgueddfa) is a Welsh historical society that promotes "the study and understanding of the Archaeology, History, Geology, Natural History, the Arts and Literature of Wales, especially the historic county of Brecknock." The Brecknock Society was founded in 1928. In 1929 they made a successful appeal for the government to purchase Tretower Court, which had become badly neglected. The society handed the museum and its collections to the Breconshire County Council in 1950. In 1986 the Brecknock Society merged with the Friends of Brecknock Museum to form the Brecknock Society and Museum Friends. The organization publishes the historical journal ''Brycheiniog'' since 1955. It also awards the annual Roland Mathias Prize, a literary prize named after author Roland Mathias. Powys (; ) is a Local government in Wales#Principal areas, county and Preserved counties of Wales, preserved county in Wales. Brycheiniog
Brycheiniog was an independent kingdom in South Wales in the Early Middle Ages. It often acted as a buffer state between England to the east and the south Welsh kingdom of Deheubarth to the west. It was conquered and pacified by the Normans between 1088 and 1095, though it remained Welsh in character. It was transformed into the Lordship of Brecknock and later formed the southern and larger part of the historic county of Brecknockshire. To its south was the Kingdom of Morgannwg. The main legacy of the kingdom of Brycheiniog is etymological. It has lent its name to Brecknockshire (Welsh: ''Sir Frycheiniog'', the shire of Brycheiniog) and Brecon (known as ''Aberhonddu'' in Welsh). Glanmor Williams
Sir Glanmor Williams (5 May 1920 – 24 February 2005) was one of Wales's most eminent historians. Sir Glanmor was born in Dowlais, into a working-class family, and was educated at Cyfarthfa Grammar School in Merthyr Tydfil. He studied at Aberystwyth alongside Alun Lewis and Emyr Humphreys, becoming a specialist in the early modern period of Welsh history. His long academic career included 37 years at the University of Wales, Swansea, between 1945 and 1982, and ten as vice-president of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. He joined Swansea University in 1945 and was Professor of History at Swansea University from 1957 to 1982, his research interests focused on the Protestant Reformation and its impact on Welsh life and culture.
