Bryce Stringam
Bryce Coleman Stringam (February 8, 1920 – June 2, 2000) was a politician and author from Alberta, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1955 to 1959 as an independent. Early life Stringam's father, George Stringam, was a member of the Alberta legislature. Stringam graduated from Olds College with a degree in agronomy in 1937 and became a cattle rancher. He married Mary Morgan and fathered seven children. Political career Stringam first ran for a seat in the Alberta Legislature in the 1955 general election. Running as an independent in the electoral district of Bow Valley-Empress, he defeated incumbent Wilson Cain. Cardston, Alberta
Cardston is a town in Alberta, Canada. It was first settled in 1887 by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) who travelled from Utah, via the Macleod-Benton Trail, to present-day Alberta in one of the century's last wagon migrations. The founder of the town was Charles Ora Card. The combined church and school was completed by January 29 the year following their arrival. History Cardston has been "dry" ( alcohol free) since at least the 1915 Alberta Liquor plebiscite, and there are no licensed premises in which to use video lottery terminals. In 1951, 75% of Cardston's 3500 residents were members of the LDS Church. It remains at about 80%, as of 2014. George Lewis Stringam (May 21, 1876 – July 4, 1959) was a provincial politician and cattle rancher from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1921 to 1935 sitting with the United Farmers caucus in government. Early life George Lewis Stringam was born on May 21, 1876, in Holden, Utah, United States. He married Mary Anne Snow on October 17, 1897, and fathered two children. Both children, twins, died at birth on July 21, 1898, and his wife died a few days later due to complications. Stringam married Sarah Lovina Williams on June 7, 1905. He fathered eleven children with her, two of which died at an early age. 1955 Alberta General Election
The 1955 Alberta general election was held on June 29, 1955, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Despite losing almost 10% of the popular vote (compared to its 1952 proportion of the vote) and 30% of its seats in the legislature, the Social Credit Party, led by Ernest C. Manning, received a slightly higher number of votes than in 1952 and won a comfortable majority for its sixth term in government. The Liberal Party emerged as the principal opposition to the Social Credit juggernaut, winning over 30% of the popular vote, and increasing its legislative caucus from 4 members to 15.
