Career Before being elected to the Brisbane City Council, Walsh was a schoolteacher. He joined the Ashgrove branch of the Labor Party in 1949. In late 1974 Lord Mayor of Brisbane Clem Jones announced he would not stand in the upcoming election. After resigning the following year he was replaced by Walsh (who had been vice-mayor). Walsh served as Lord Mayor for nine months before losing his seat at the 1976 election. Clem Jones
Clem Jones AO (16 January 191815 December 2007), a surveyor by profession, was the longest serving Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Queensland, representing the Labor Party from 1961 to 1975. He was chair of the Darwin Reconstruction Commission from 1975 to 1978. He was a successful businessman and philanthropist. Public life During Jones' 15 years in office as the head of the Brisbane City Council, assisted by the Town Clerk J. C. Slaughter, Brisbane underwent considerable change. In 1961, Brisbane was a city with no town planning, many unpaved streets, limited water supply and few areas with sewers—relying instead on outhouses or septic tanks. Through the 1960s Jones successfully led the council to develop a town plan, seal roads, improve drainage and connect sewers to most of the city. Frank Sleeman
Frank Northey Sleeman (4 March 1915 – 1 August 2000) was Lord Mayor of Brisbane from 1976 to 1982. Early life and education Sleeman grew up in Redfern, Sydney. He attended Canterbury Boys' High School. Military service and prisoner of war Sleeman was an army lieutenant at the outbreak of the Second World War. He was captured by the Japanese and spent 3 years and 8 months as a prisoner of war in Jentsuji Prison Camp Japan. After the war, Sleeman settled in Townsville and worked as a salesman for the Australian General Electric Company. He married Norma Robinson on 29 December 1945. Lord Mayor of Brisbane Major Sleeman became Lord Mayor of Brisbane in 1976 after the Labor party leader in the Brisbane City Council, Bryan Walsh, failed to hold his ward. Ashgrove is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Ashgrove had a population of 13,039 people. Geography Ashgrove is located approximately by road north-west of the Brisbane GPO.
