Brutal (film)
''Brutal'' is a 1980 Filipino film directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya with a screenplay by Ricky Lee. It was the first major Filipino film to tackle rape as a feminist issue. ''Brutal'' was followed by ''Moral'' (1982) and '' Karnal'' (1983), a loose trilogy of feminist films directed by Abaya and written by Lee. Marilou Diaz-Abaya
Marilou Correa Diaz-Abaya (March 30, 1955 – October 8, 2012) was a Filipina multi-award winning film director. She was conferred the Order of National Artists of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts in 2022, she was the founder and president of the Marilou Diaz-Abaya Film Institute and Arts Center, a film school based in Antipolo, Philippines. She was the director of the 1998 film ''José Rizal'', a biographical film on the Philippines' national hero. She was part of the Second Golden Age of Philippine Cinema. Early life Diaz was born in Quezon City in 1955. She was one of seven children of lawyers Conrado Diaz and Felicitas Correa Diaz. She grew up quite privileged. Her father is from Paoay, Ilocos Norte, and is related to Valentín Díaz, who was one of the founding signatories in 1892 of the nationalist association La Liga Filipina with José Rizal, whom her famous film was about. Lino Brocka
Catalino Ortiz Brocka (April 3, 1939 – May 22, 1991) was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema. He co-founded the organization Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), dedicated to helping artists address issues confronting the country, and the Free the Artist Movement. He was a member of the Coalition for the Restoration of Democracy. He directed landmark films such as ''Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang'' (1974), '' Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag'' (1975), ''Insiang'' (1976), '' Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim'' (1984), and '' Orapronobis'' (1989). The Gawad Urian Awards are annual film awards in the Philippines held since 1977. It is given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP, "the Filipino Film Critics") and is currently regarded as the counterpart of the United States' New York Film Critics Circle. Establishment The MPP was formed by a host of scholars, film writers and other award-winning writers on May 1, 1976 as a critics' voice to rival the then-only award-giving body in the Philippines, which is its Oscars', the FAMAS Awards. Three years earlier, what would be the members of the MPP were included in the judges' roster of the FAMAS after a shocking 1972 Best Actress tie materialized between major star Boots Anson-Roa and then-rising star Vilma Santos.
