Brunswick And Birmingham Railroad
The Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad (B&B) was a railroad in southeastern United States. It was chartered on December 11, 1900. In 1902–03, it built a line from Brunswick, Georgia to Offerman, Georgia and a line from Bushnell, Georgia to Ocilla, Georgia. The B&B purchased the Offerman and Western Railroad on July 1, 1902, and the Ocilla and Irwinville Railroad on February 19, 1903. The railroad ran into financial troubles and was purchased by the Atlantic and Birmingham Railway in April 1904. The segment of the line built between Birmingham, Alabama and Alma, Georgia was abandoned by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1953. The remainder of the line survived the 1967 merger of the ACL and SAL to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, and the acquisition of the Family Lines ( CRR, L&N, GA, AWP) into the Seaboard System Railroad in 1982. The Seaboard System Railroad, Inc. was a US Class I railroad that operated from 1982 to 1986. Since the late 1960s, Seaboard Coast Line Industries had operated the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, Seaboard Coast Line and its sister railroads—notably the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, Louisville & Nashville and Clinchfield Railroad, Clinchfield—as the "Family Lines System". The Ritz Theatre is a historic theater in Brunswick, Georgia. Built in 1899, it originally served as an opera house, but was later converted to a movie palace. The building is currently owned by the city of Brunswick and is a contributing property of the Brunswick Old Town Historic District. History The Grand Opera House was built in 1899 as the main opera house in Brunswick, Georgia. Plans for the construction of the building had been in place since 1895, and the building served as a replacement for the L'Arioso Opera House, which had been destroyed by a storm in 1896. In addition to the theater, the building housed several retailers on its first floor, and the second and third floors served as the general offices of the Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad. The Atlanta and West Point Rail Road was a railroad in the U.S. state of Georgia, forming the east portion of the Atlanta- Selma West Point Route. The company was chartered in 1847 as the Atlanta and LaGrange Rail Road and renamed in 1857; construction of the gauge line was begun in 1849-50 and completed in May 1854. A large minority interest owned by the Georgia Railroad and Banking Company eventually passed under the control of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL), which later acquired a majority of the stock. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad , commonly called the L&N, was a Class I railroad that operated freight and passenger services in the southeast United States.
