Brunner (crater)
Brunner is a lunar impact crater that is located along the eastern limb of the Moon, to the southeast of the Mare Smythii. At this location the crater is viewed from the edge, and so it is not possible to see much detail from the Earth. The visibility of this formation is also affected by libration. The crater lies to the southwest of the walled plain Hirayama, and to the east of the elongated crater Houtermans. The rim of Brunner is well-defined and nearly circular, although there is a slight outward bulge and a depressed wall along the north. The interior of the crater is rugged and irregular, with a central ridge formation at the midpoint. There is also a ring-like formation on the floor that is concentric with the inner wall. Apollo 17 (December 7–19, 1972) was the final mission of NASA's Apollo program, the most recent time humans have set foot on the Moon or traveled beyond low Earth orbit. Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt walked on the Moon, while Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans (astronaut), Ronald Evans orbited above. Schmitt was the only professional geologist to land on the Moon; he was selected in place of Joe Engle, as NASA had been under pressure to send a scientist to the Moon. The mission's heavy emphasis on science meant the inclusion of a number of new experiments, including a Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum, and Phooey, biological experiment containing five mice that was carried in the command module. Houtermans (crater)
Houtermans is a lunar impact crater that is located beside the eastern limb of the Moon, in the region of the surface where visibility is affected by libration. It lies to the east of the crater Kreiken, and south of the crater pairing of Helmert and Kao. This is an elongated formation created by two or more merged crater formations. Hirayama (crater)
Hirayama is a large lunar impact crater that is located on the far side of the Moon, just beyond the eastern limb. This region of the surface is sometimes brought into view from Earth during periods of favourable libration. However it is best viewed from orbit. This crater is located along the southeastern edge of the Mare Smythii, to the northeast of the crater Brunner. To the northeast of Hirayama is Wyld. On the west rim of Hirayama is the small, bright-rayed crater Bandfield. This is a worn and eroded crater with multiple impacts overlapping the outer rim and the interior floor. William Otto Brunner
William Otto Brunner (7 July 1878 – 1 December 1958) was a Switzerland, Swiss astronomer. From 1926 until 1945 he was the director of the Swiss Federal Observatory. He continued the series of Zürich sunspot observations that was begun in 1864 by the observatory founder, Rudolf Wolf. (These observations continue up to the present.) Libration
In lunar astronomy, libration is the wagging or wavering of the Moon perceived by Earth-bound observers and caused by changes in their perspective. It permits an observer to see slightly different hemispheres of the surface at different times. It is similar in both cause and effect to the changes in the Moon's apparent size due to changes in distance. It is caused by three mechanisms detailed below, two of which cause a relatively tiny physical libration via tidal forces exerted by the Earth.
