''Brother Joe'' (Spanish: ''El Hermano José'') is a 1941 Argentine comedy film. Production The 93-minute black and white film was made for Argentina Sono Film by director Antonio Momplet. It was written by Nicolás Proserpio, and stars Pepe Arias, Carlos Castro and Ada Cornaro. Synopsis The movie deals with the interaction in a small town between a healer, his daughter and a young doctor, between science and superstition. Reception ''La Nación'' called the film a popular and satirical comedy. Halki noted that it was a visual version of a successful radio show. Manrupe and Portela and said it was a classic Pepe Arias work, with everything good and bad that implies, and had been filmed without much effort. Antonio Momplet
Antonio Momplet (1899 – 10 August 1974) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter. He worked in Spain, France, Argentina and Mexico. Life and career Antonio Momplet was born in Cádiz, Andalusia. He worked as a journalist and translator of foreign films in Barcelona until 1927, when he moved to Paris and began to work for Gaumont. In the mid 1930s he moved back to Spain where he directed four feature films and founded the film journal ''Cine Art'', which quickly became influential. To avoid the Spanish Civil War, he moved to Argentina in 1937, and made eight feature films the following years. In 1943 he moved to Mexico to join the film industry there, and made a number of Mexican films both as director and writer for others, before he moved back to Buenos Aires in 1946. In 1952 he returned to Spain. During his final Spanish period he made films such as the Spaghetti Western parody ''Due contro tutti'', before he retired in 1964. Pepe Arias (''José Pablo Arias Martinez''; 16 January 1900 – 23 February 1967) was an Argentine actor and comedian. Early years José Pablo Arias Martinez was born in the former Mercado de Abasto district of Buenos Aires on 16 January 1900. He first appeared on stage in 1916, and became a remarkable stage actor in grotesque, comedy and drama roles. In 1922 the influence of the company of Madame Rasimi and her Ba-Ta-Clán, arrived from Paris, established the structure of the Buenos Aires revue. Arias learned his art among the founders of Argentine theater, such as Luis Arata and Enrique Da Rosas.
