Brooklyn Museum Art School
The Brooklyn Museum Art School was a non-degree-granting professional school that opened at the Brooklyn Museum in Brooklyn, New York in the summer of 1941. The Brooklyn Museum Art School provided instruction for amateur artists as well until January 1985, when it was transferred to the Pratt Institute’s Continuing Education Division. History Prior to the creation of the Brooklyn Museum Art School, classes for amateur artists had been offered by the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (BIAS), the Museum's parent organization. BIAS offered hands-on art classes dating back to 1893 on Montague Street in Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Museum Art School title was first used in the 1941-42 annual report from the Brooklyn Museum, remaining separate from the Brooklyn Museum's Education Department, which was directed towards children. Bruce Conner (November 18, 1933 – July 7, 2008) was an American artist who worked with assemblage, film, drawing, sculpture, painting, collage, and photography. Biography Bruce Conner was born November 18, 1933 in McPherson, Kansas.His well-to-do middle-class family moved to Wichita, when Conner was four. He attended high school in Wichita, Kansas. Boaz Vaadia (November 13, 1951 – February 25, 2017) was an Israeli–American artist and sculptor who worked primarily in stone and subsequently by casting in bronze. Based in New York City since 1975, his studio is located in Brooklyn. The power of natural materials and the relation of human beings to that power determine the content of Vaadia's sculpture. Murray Tinkelman
Murray Tinkelman (April 2, 1933 – January 30, 2016) was an American science-fiction and fantasy illustrator. He won gold medals from the Society of Illustrators. He provided numerous book covers for paperback reprints of science fiction and fantasy novels for Ballantine Books in the 1970s, including the reprints of many of John Brunner's novels. Biography In 1970, the Graphic Arts Guild named him Artist of the Year. An avid baseball fan, Tinkelman’s work was presented in a rare solo exhibition in 1994 at The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. The following year, Tinkelman was named “Sports Artist of the Year” by the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Alabama, and was the focus of an exhibition. Mel Tanner (September 26, 1925 - October 21, 1993) was an American light sculptor, painter, installation artist, and videographer. His wife, Dorothy Tanner (January 30, 1923 - July 23, 2020), was an American light sculptor, installation artist, musician, videographer, and spoken word artist based in Denver, Colorado. The couple worked very closely for over 40 years. Robert Smithson
Robert Smithson (January 2, 1938 – July 20, 1973) was an American artist known for sculpture and land art who often used drawing and photography in relation to the spatial arts. His work has been internationally exhibited in galleries and museums and is held in public collections. Andres Serrano
Andres Serrano (born August 15, 1950) is an American photographer and artist. His work, often considered transgressive art, includes photos of corpses and uses feces and bodily fluids. His '' Piss Christ'' (1987) is a red-tinged photograph of a crucifix submerged in a glass container of what was purported to be the artist's own urine. Gerson Leiber
Gerson Leiber (November 12, 1921 – April 28, 2018) was an American painter, lithographer and sculptor. Biography Gerson Leiber was born November 12, 1921, in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Titusville, in northwest Pennsylvania. He served in the United States Army and was assigned to its Signal Corps, during World War II. He met his future wife, Judith Peto while serving overseas in Budapest. They married in 1946 and moved back to the United States, eventually settling in New York City. Irwin Hollander (1927–2018) was an American artist and master printmaker, based in New York City. He helped revive lithography as a fine art around the 1960s.
