Bronte Surf Lifesaving Club
The club was founded in 1903 and the movement has since spread to other parts of New South Wales and the rest of the country. The club rests on indigenous land and whilst there is no clear evidence for the name or names of the Eora people who lived in what is now the Waverley area, most sources agree on the Cadigal, but some sources name the Biddigal and Birrabirragal bands as well. History of the club After swimming became more acceptable amongst society in the very late 1800s, the rate of drownings increased significantly at Bronte beach and other beaches across NSW. As such, it became obvious that there was a need for some system to protect people who had ventured into the surf. Although there were no surf clubs there were swimming clubs up and down the east coast of Australia with groups of individuals who became the unofficial surf lifesavers. Nippers
Nippers are young surf lifesavers, usually aged between 5 and 14 years old, in clubs across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Unlike senior surf lifesavers, the majority of them do not patrol the beaches. The focus for Nippers tends to be on fun, and surf awareness. Nippers learn about safety at the beach. They learn about dangers such as rocks, animals (e.g. the blue-ringed octopus), and surf conditions, such as rip currents, sandbars, and waves. Older Nippers also learn some basic first aid and may also learn CPR when they reach the age of 13. When Nippers are thirteen years old they can complete their SRC (Surf Rescue Certificate), enabling them to patrol beaches and partake in Senior Competition. Like their Senior counterparts, Nippers participate in regular competition against other Surf Lifesaving Clubs, at sports carnivals. William Gocher
William Henry Gocher (20 March 1856 – 18 August 1921) was an Australian artist and bimetallist who campaigned to end the ban on daylight sea bathing in Sydney. Gocher was born in Ipswich in Suffolk to salesman Charles Gocher and Louisa King. He attended St John's College at Hurstpierpoint and converted to Roman Catholicism, coming to Australia around 1872. He worked as an artist in Sydney from around 1884. On 2 May 1888 he married Elizabeth Josephine Storm at Surry Hills. He was part of the bimetallic movement in the 1890s and was vice-president of the Bimetallic League of New South Wales; he also admired William Jennings Bryan and supported Federation, believing it would save Australia from the "jeers of Jews, capitalists and the press". He ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1901 and for the New South Wales Parliament in 1901 and 1904, continuing to campaign for bimetallism as president of the Australian Currency League from 1912 to 1918. Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) is an Australian not-for-profit community organisation that promotes water safety and provides surf rescue services.
