Broken Hill South
Broken Hill South Limited was an Australian silver, lead and zinc mining company with mines at Broken Hill, New South Wales. It is not to be confused with Broken Hill South Blocks Ltd, which was acquired by Lakeview Consols in 1905 and Zinc Corporation (later Consolidated Zinc) in 1911. History In September 1885 a prospectus was issued for the formation of a company called Broken Hill South Silver Mining Company Limited with paid-up capital of £100,000 and rights to purchase Mineral Lease blocks 5, 6, 7, and 8, totalling adjacent BHP's celebrated property, their intention being to exploit them sequentially. Broken Hill, New South Wales
Broken Hill is an inland mining city in the far west of outback New South Wales, Australia. It is near the border with South Australia on the crossing of the Barrier Highway (A32) and the Silver City Highway (B79), in the Barrier Range. It is 315m above sea level, with a hot desert climate, and an average rainfall of 235mm. The closest major city is Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, which is more than 500km to the southwest and linked via route A32. Consolidated Zinc was an Australian mining company from 1905 to 1962. History The company's initial operations focused on extracting zinc from mine tailings of the Broken Hill Ore Deposit at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia. The company was founded in Melbourne on 9 September 1905 as the Zinc Corporation Limited, to exploit residual zinc concentrations with an estimated value of $12 million in the 6 million tons of mine tailings deposited from mining activities over the previous 20 years. Key figures involved in the effort included William Baillieu and William Sydney Robinson. Also involved was future U.S. president, but then a mining engineer working for Bewick, Moreing and Company, Herbert Hoover, who inspected the tailing dumps in the group's investigations prior to formation of the company. History First published on 28 February 1888, ''The Barrier Miner'' was published continuously until 25 November 1974. Copies are available on microfilm and online via Trove Digitised Newspapers. The paper was revived briefly in 2005; an index to births deaths and marriages has been prepared which also notes additional publication dates between 16 December 2005 and 31 July 2008.
