The men's 800 metres event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California took place between 3 and 6 August. Sixty-nine athletes from 55 nations competed. Robin Tattersall
Dr. Robin Erskine Tattersall OBE (born 21 July 1930) is a British doctor, model and sailor who competed in the Summer Olympics for the British Virgin Islands. Biography Tattersall was born in Manchester, United Kingdom. In the 1950s, while training to be a doctor at St George's Hospital in Hyde Park, Tattersall modelled for Richard Avedon alongside Suzy Parker. Tattersall competed at two Summer Olympics. At the 1984 Summer Olympics he was helmsman in the Soling Class with Keith Thomas and Elvet Meyers. Out of 22 crews the team finished 21st. Eight years later at Barcelona he competed in the Soling Class again, this time with Robert Hirst and John Shirley. They finished 17th out of 24. Soling
The Soling is an open keelboat that holds the World Sailing "International class" status. The class was used from the 1972 Olympics (Kiel) until the 2000 Olympics (Sydney) as " Open Three Person Keelboat". Besides the Olympic career of the Soling the boat is used for International and local regattas as well as for recreational sailing. The Soling is managed by the International Soling Association under auspician of World Sailing/ISAF/IYRU since 1968. The Soling is a strong boat designed for any wind and sea condition by Jan Herman Linge from Norway in 1964. The boats are one-design originating from an authorized single plug and mould system and made of fiberglass. This together with a strict set of class rules makes competition possible on a "level playing field". Summary The final saw Sunday Uti start off with a strong leg in lane 7, giving the Nigerian team the lead going in to the first handoff. Moses Ugbusien took the baton rather casually, the slow start giving Darren Clark the chance to pass during the curve, putting Australia into the lead at the break. Taking an efficient tangent from lane 8, Ray Armstead gained ground on Ugbusien, moving to his shoulder to try to make a pass for the Americans on the stretch, 4 meters behind Clark who was running a 43.86 split, which exactly equalled Lee Evans' world record at the time. Ugbusien didn't relent and the two teams passed virtually even. On the handoff, Alonzo Babers got the edge, trying to keep up with Rotimi Peters.
