Brinje is a municipality in Lika-Senj County, Croatia, located about 35 miles from Gospić. The town is formed around a castle called ''Sokolac'', which contains one of the most well preserved Gothic chapels in Croatia, St. Marys, which dates back to the 14th century. The Sokolac Castle in the town is named after the Croatian word for falcon (''sokol''), which appears on the town's coat of arms. History Brinje's history dates back to medieval times, while the town was held by the noble Frankopan and Gorjanski families. Brinje was important medieval fortified city held by Frenkopan family. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Brinje was part of the Lika-Krbava County of the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia. It is some 60 km north of Gospić, on once important road, the " Josephina", passing from the hinterland through the Kapela pass towards the coast in Senj. Sokolac Castle
Sokolac Castle ( hr, Gradina Sokolac) is a castle in Brinje, Croatia. It is named after the Croatian word for falcon (''sokol''), which appears on the town's coat of arms. History It dates back to medieval times built under King Ladislaus IV of Hungary, while the town was held by the noble Frankopan and Gorjanski families. The castle was part of an important medieval fortified city held by Frankopan family. Sokolac Castle was an extremely grand building, dominated by the powerful perpendiculars of the entry tower, and the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Lika
Lika () is a traditional region of Croatia proper, roughly bound by the Velebit mountain from the southwest and the Plješevica mountain from the northeast. Josephina (road)
The ''Josephina'' ( hr, Jozefina or , german: Josefiner Straße) is a historic road in Croatia that connects Senj and thus the Adriatic coast and Karlovac and the Pannonian plain. It crosses the Dinaric Alps via the Vratnik pass ( above sea level) between Senj and Brinje and the Kapela Pass between Brinje and Josipdol. Vratnik pass, currently a part of the D23 road, was already in use during Roman time as a salt road, and it became important for timber and other goods in the Middle Ages. However, the first well documented road built along the route was ''Via Josephina'' named after Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor who commissioned its construction in 1775. Latin inscriptions carved in rock along the original Via Josephina route completed in 1779 testify that the Emperor travelled through the Vratnik pass on horseback when he realized that the route between Senj, as a major fortress on Adriatic coast, and the hinterland was nearly impassable.
