Bridgend Central ( cy, Canol Pen-y-bont) is the name of an electoral ward in Bridgend County Borough, Wales. It covers part of the county town of Bridgend. The ward elects three councillors to Bridgend County Borough Council. The ward was created following the recommendations of a 2019 local government boundary review, with the merger of the former county wards of Morfa and Newcastle. According to the 2011 UK Census, the population of the Morfa ward was 4,692 and in the Newcastle ward it was 5,421. Bridgend County Borough ( cy, Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is a county borough in the south-east of Wales. The county borough has a total population of 139,200 people, and contains the town of Bridgend, after which it is named. Its members of the Senedd are Sarah Murphy MS, representing the Bridgend Constituency, and Huw Irranca-Davies MS representing the Ogmore Constituency, and its members of UK parliament are Jamie Wallis and Chris Elmore. The county borough lies at the geographical heart of south Wales. Its land area of 110 mi2 (285 km2) stretches 12 miles (20 km) from east to west and occupies the Llynfi, Garw and Ogmore valleys. Bridgend
Bridgend (; cy, Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr or just , meaning "the end of the bridge on the Ogmore") is a town in Bridgend County Borough in Wales, west of Cardiff and east of Swansea. The town is named after the Old Bridge, Bridgend, medieval bridge over the River Ogmore. The River Ewenny also flows through the town. The population was 49,597 in 2021. Bridgend County Borough Council ( cy, Cyngor Bwrdeistref Sirol Pen-y-bont ar Ogwr) is the governing body for Bridgend County Borough, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. History Bridgend County Borough and Bridgend County Borough Council came into effect from 1 April 1996, following the ''Local Government (Wales) Act 1994''. Bridgend County Borough Council largely replaced Ogwr Borough Council, though St Brides Major, Ewenny and Wick were transferred from Ogwr to the Vale of Glamorgan. Morfa is an electoral ward in the town of Bridgend, Wales. The ward elects councillors to Bridgend Town Council and, until 2022, Bridgend County Borough Council. Description The Morfa ward is bounded by the River Ogmore to the west, Brackla Street (and part of Bridgend town centre) in the south and the line of the old railway to the east. It includes Bridgend railway station in the south and Wildmill railway station in the north. The ward covers the Wildmill housing estate. Newcastle is an area and electoral ward of the town of Bridgend, Wales. The area includes the medieval Newcastle Castle. 2022 Bridgend County Borough Council Election
The 2022 Bridgend County Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. Fifty one councillors were elected to Bridgend County Borough Council. Welsh Labour gained the council from no overall control. Ward boundary changes A local government boundary review of electoral wards took place prior to the election, by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales. The recommendations were accepted by the Welsh Government in July 2021. For Bridgend County Borough, the number of wards were to be reduced, from 39 to 28. The number of councillors was to drop from 54 to 51. These changes were to take effect from the 2022 council election.
