Bridekirk
Bridekirk is a village and civil parish in the Allerdale district in the county of Cumbria, England. It is around north of the Derwent river and about the same distance from the nearest large town of Cockermouth just south of the river. Bridekirk is just outside the Lake District National Park ( by road) and is not far from the Maryport and Carlisle Railway. Bridekirk ecclesiastical parish had in 1811 a population of 1552 persons. It has since been altered in area by the formation of separate parishes: # Great Broughton, in 1863, which included Ribton. # Christ Church, Cockermouth, in 1865, was given part of the township of Papcastle. # Broughton Moor parish in 1898 was formed with Little Broughton. In addition to the township of Bridekirk itself, Bridekirk ecclesiastical parish now only contains Papcastle, Dovenby, and Tallentire. Dovenby is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Bridekirk, in the Allerdale district, in the county of Cumbria, England. It is on the A594 road (Cumbria), A594 road and is north west of Cockermouth, east of Dearham, east of Maryport, north east of Workington and south west of Carlisle. In 1931 the parish had a population of 163. Etymology 'Dovenby' is 'Dufan's bȳ' or 'Dufan's hamlet or village'. 'Bȳ' is late Old English, from Old Norse 'býr'. The personal name 'Dufan' "is of Irish origin (OIr 'Dubhán'), a diminutive of 'dubh', 'black', but it is on record from Iceland." Tallentire is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Bridekirk, in the Allerdale borough of Cumbria, England. It is about north of Cockermouth. The village is located just outside the Lake District National Park. In 1931 the parish had a population of 184. Etymology The name ''Tallentire'' is one of Brittonic origins. The first element ''tāl'' means "brow, front, end", and the terminal element ''*tīr'' means "land" (Welsh ''tâl'' and ''tir''). Unusually, "Tallentire" appears to contain a definite article in the form of ''-en'', leading to the proposition that ''* n'' was a definite article in the Brittonic of the North, although ''ï ' (Welsh ''y''; see Penyghent, Penicuik) is considerably more common. Little Broughton
Little Broughton is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Broughton, in the Allerdale district, in the county of Cumbria, England, located west of Cockermouth. In 1891 the parish had a population of 820. Governance Little Broughton is part of the Workington constituency of the UK parliament. The current Member of Parliament is Mark Jenkinson, a member of the Conservative Party. Until the 2019 General Election the Labour Party had won the seat in every general election since 1979; the Conservative Party had previously only been elected once in Workington since the Second World War: this being in the 1976 Workington by-election. Cockermouth
Cockermouth is a market town and civil parish in the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria, England, so named because it is at the confluence of the River Cocker as it flows into the River Derwent. The mid-2010 census estimates state that Cockermouth has a population of 8,204, increasing to 8,761 at the 2011 Census. Historically a part of Cumberland, Cockermouth is situated outside the English Lake District on its northwest fringe. Much of the architectural core of the town remains unchanged since the basic medieval layout was filled in the 18th and 19th centuries. The regenerated market place is now a central historical focus within the town and reflects events from its 800-year history. Maryport And Carlisle Railway
The Maryport & Carlisle Railway (M&CR) was an English railway company formed in 1836 which built and operated a small but eventually highly profitable railway to connect Maryport and Carlisle in Cumbria, England. There were many small collieries in the area and efficient access to the harbour at Maryport was important. The western end, connecting the majority of the collieries to Maryport opened in 1840 and the line was completed throughout to Carlisle in 1845. The considerable resources of coal, and later iron ore, carried by the railway made it especially profitable, and this was redoubled at the height of the iron and steel processing industries around Workington. Branch lines were opened to connect further collieries. After 1918 the industries on which the line was dependent declined steeply, and the railway declined accordingly; the branch lines closed, but the original main line remains open and forms part of the Cumbrian Coast Line between Carlisle and Barrow in Furness. ... Papcastle
Papcastle is a village and civil parish in the borough of Allerdale in the English county of Cumbria. The village is now effectively a northern extension of Cockermouth, which lies to the south of the River Derwent. It has its own parish council and lies within Bridekirk Parish for Church of England purposes. In 2001 it had a population of 406, reducing to 385 at the 2011 Census. The name of Papcastle is said to be a compound formed from Old Norse and Old English ''papi''+''cæster'', meaning 'the Roman fort inhabited by a hermit'. Mark Jenkinson
Mark Ian Jenkinson (born 28 January 1982) is a British Conservative Party politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Workington since 2019. Early life and career Jenkinson was born in Whitehaven and raised in Workington. He was educated at St Joseph's Catholic High School, Workington and Newton Rigg College, Penrith, where he pursued agricultural studies, before joining British Steel as an apprentice. Prior to becoming an MP, he worked as a self-employed contractor in the nuclear supply chain. Political career Jenkinson was the UK Independence Party candidate for Workington in 2015.
