Brian Bram
Brian Bram (born May 9, 1955, in Chicago), raised in Deerfield, Illinois, played a minor role in the underground comix movement with his contributions to ''American Splendor'', the comic book series written and published by Harvey Pekar. Biography Bram's first paid illustration job was a logo for a local rock band. At 17 he began contributing to ''Triad'', a Chicago-based alternative magazine that published work by Skip Williamson and others. At 18 Bram served briefly as art director for the magazine. Bram moved to Cleveland in 1975 to major in design and illustration at the Cleveland Institute of Art. According to the Comiclopedia, underground cartoonist Jay Lynch introduced him to Pekar who hired him to illustrate stories in the first issue of ''American Splendor''. Bram contributed to the first two issues of ''American Splendor'', along with artists Gary Dumm, Greg Budgett, and Robert Crumb. Grand Central Publishing is a book publishing imprint of Hachette Book Group, originally established in 1970 as Warner Books when Warner Communications acquired the Paperback Library. When Time Warner sold their book publishing business to Hachette Livre in March 2006, the North American operations of the Time Warner Book Group were renamed Hachette Book Group, while the group's Warner Books imprint became Grand Central Publishing, named in part by the proximity of their new offices to New York's Grand Central Terminal. Bookpeople was an employee-owned and operated book wholesaler and distributor based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It operated from 1969-2003. Bookpeople was one of the major forces behind the renaissance of independent publishing that occurred during this period. The business provided a wide range of hard-to-find titles to bookstores throughout the U.S. and the world. It also played a major role in the development of New Age and radical political publishing and bookselling. It was not related to The Book People, a U.K. publishing concern, or BookPeople, an Austin, Texas bookstore. History Don Gerrard started the business in 1969, which afterward was purchased by the employees, who re-formed it into a type of cooperative business. They incorporated in 1971 as the Bookpeople Employee's Association. It was one of the earliest cooperatives in the Bay Area.
