Bretteville-sur-Laize () is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. The scene of heavy fighting following the Normandy landings, much of the town is of post-World War II construction. Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery
The Bretteville-sur-Laize Canadian War Cemetery is a war cemetery containing predominantly Canadian soldiers killed during the later stages of the Battle of Normandy in the Second World War. It is located close to the village of Cintheaux and named after Bretteville-sur-Laize in the Calvados department, between Caen and Falaise in lower Normandy. History Bretteville-sur-Laize was created as a permanent resting place for Canadian soldiers who had been temporarily buried in smaller plots close to where they fell. At the time of the cemetery's creation, France granted Canada a perpetual concession to the land occupied by the cemetery. Of the 2,958 burials, 2,782 are Canadian of whom 87 remain unidentified, together with 80 British, four Australian and one each from France and New Zealand. Chagford
Chagford is a market town and civil parish on the north-east edge of Dartmoor, in Devon, England, close to the River Teign and the A382, 4 miles (6 km) west of Moretonhampstead. The name is derived from ''chag'', meaning gorse or broom, and the ''ford'' suffix indicates its importance as a crossing place. At the 2011 Census, it had a population of 1,449. History Archaeological remains confirm that a community has existed here for at least 4000 years. In historical times, Chagford grew due to the wool trade and from tin mining in the area. A weekly market was held here from before 1220, and a monthly livestock market in the town survived until the 1980s. In 1305 it was made a stannary town where tin was traded. Château Des Riffets
The Château des Riffets is a château in the village of Bretteville-sur-Laize, Calvados department, Normandy, northwestern France. History The château was built around 1880; the nearby farm dates from the 18th century. It was built on the ruins of a coaching inn used by William the Conqueror in the 11th century. During the Second World War, German troops were stationed there, and during the D-Day landings of June 1944, the château housed a German bomb dump. The château has been partially destroyed at least 3 times: once in the 13th century, again during the French Revolution and most recently by accidental bombing during the Second World War, as when the USAAF attempted to bomb the bomb dump for the first time, they missed it and hit the château instead.
