Bull Creek, Western Australia
Bull Creek is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the local government area of City of Melville. The suburb lies to the south of a creek of the same name, which flows into the Canning River. History Prior to European settlement, Bull Creek was inhabited by Aboriginal people from the Wadjuk Beeliar tribe. They used the wetlands as a summer source of food and fresh water. The area is significant to the Beeliar and is referred to as Gabbiljee, the watery place at the end of the river. The name was adopted by the City of Melville Council in December 1968. The creek was named after an early settler, Henry Bull to whom a grant of of nearby land was made in 1830. A larger grant of later in that year was made to Thomas Middleton; it is this land that today makes up the largest part of the suburb. John Bateman (Australian Settler)
John Bateman (1789 – 3 April 1855) was an early colonist at Fremantle. He was the postmaster, general store owner and an investor in the Fremantle Whaling Company. The suburb of Bateman is named after him and his family. Life Bateman was born in London, and was dealing in silk when he married Mary Ann Benningfield in 1824. They had nine children including three sons who emigrated with Bateman and his wife to the new Swan River Colony in Western Australia in 1830. They bought a plot in Fremantle in the second tranche of land made available by the Governor of Western Australia. On this acre of land Bateman built a stone residence and a general store. In 1833 he took on the job of postmaster, a position that his family carried out for many years. Bateman's eldest son, John Wesley Bateman, took an interest in the coast and as a teenager he would journey out with the American whaling ships. Brentwood is a town in the Borough of Brentwood, in the county of Essex in the East of England. Bull Creek railway station is a railway station on the Transperth network. It is located on the Mandurah line, 11.7 kilometres from Perth station inside the median strip of the Kwinana Freeway serving the suburb of Bull Creek. History The contract for the construction of Bull Creek railway station, along with Canning Bridge railway station and Murdoch railway station, was awarded to John Holland Pty Ltd in November 2004. This contract was the first contract awarded for the construction of stations on the Southern Suburbs Railway project, and it had a value of $32 million. During planning, the station was projected to have 3,100 boardings per day upon opening. Winthrop is a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Melville. History Winthrop was originally a pine tree plantation owned by the University of Western Australia. The first blocks were sold in the early 1980s. After the first residents moved in, more blocks were sold off in a number of phases. Shortly after the first residents, a convenience store opened for business, which now includes a post office, IGA store and a florist. Soon the Winthrop Primary school and Winthrop village shopping centre were opened. Blocks were so sought after that many people resorted to sleeping near the sales office for up to a week just to secure a position. The name is derived from that of the first Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, Sir John Winthrop Hackett.
