Bremer Philharmoniker
The Bremer Philharmoniker is the official orchestra of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. In addition to the music theatre in the Theater Bremen they organise 28 Philharmonic concerts per season, various special, benefit and chamber concerts as well as many projects in the field of music education. Christian Kötter-Lixfeld is the artistic director of the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Marko Letonja has been its Generalmusikdirektor since the 2018/2019 season. History In 1820 the cathedral organist Wilhelm Friedrich Riem founded the ''Bremen Concert Orchestra''. He was conductor of this orchestra until his death (1857). He was succeeded as conductor by Carl Martin Reinthaler. The orchestra was supervised by the ''Verein Bremischer Musikfreunde'', founded in 1863. Ernst Wendel
Ernst Wendel (26 March 1876 – 21 May 1938) was a German violinist and conductor. Life Wendel was born in Breslau. For one season in 1896/97 Wendel was concertmaster of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Theodore Thomas. From 1909 to 1935, he was General Music Director of the Bremer Philharmoniker. As a violinist, he taught Georg Kulenkampff. In 1914, in Stuttgart and in 1925/26, he conducted the Frankfurter Museumsgesellschaft. In 1913, he conducted Anton Bruckner's '' Symphony No. 9'' for the first time in Russia. He made his mark on . Wendel was married to the concert pianist Ilse Wendel ''née'' Wolde. Paul Hindemith
Paul Hindemith (; 16 November 189528 December 1963) was a German composer, music theorist, teacher, violist and conductor. He founded the Amar Quartet in 1921, touring extensively in Europe. As a composer, he became a major advocate of the ''Neue Sachlichkeit'' (new objectivity) style of music in the 1920s, with compositions such as '' Kammermusik'', including works with viola and viola d'amore as solo instruments in a neo-Bachian spirit. Marko Letonja
Marko Letonja (born 12 August 1961) is a Slovenian conductor. Biography Letonja studied piano and conducting at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, where his conducting teachers included Anton Nanut. He continued his conducting studies at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, with such teachers as Otmar Suitner. He granted from the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts in 1989. From 1996 to 2002, Letonja was chief conductor of the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 2003 to 2006, held the same position with Sinfonieorchester Basel. From 2011 through the end of 2018, Letonja was chief conductor and artistic director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO). He now has the title of conductor laureate of the TSO. Lawrence Renes
Lawrence Renes (born 1970) is a Dutch-Maltese conductor. He studied violin at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and conducting at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, from which he graduated ''cum laude'' in 1993. Renes was the first prize winner at the 1992 Nederlandse Omroep Stichting conducting course NIS. In 1992, he also won the Elisabeth Everts Prize. He made his professional conducting debut with the Orchestra of Gran Canaria. He has served as an assistant conductor to Edo de Waart with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. Günter Neuhold
Günter Neuhold (born 2 November 1947) is an Austrian conductor. Born in Graz, he attended the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz and graduated in 1968 with a master's degree. He later studied conducting with Franco Ferrara in Rome and with Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. At the Theater Dortmund, Neuhold served as first conductor. Marcello Viotti
Marcello Viotti (29 June 195416 February 2005) was a Swiss classical music conductor, best known for opera. Viotti was born in Vallorbe, in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, to Italian parents. He studied cello, piano and singing at the Conservatory of Lausanne. Wolfgang Sawallisch was a mentor to Viotti and encouraged him to begin his career in the theatre. As a young conductor, Viotti honed his craft with the International Orchestra of the Jeunesses Musicales in the Italian town of Fermo, and also with a wind ensemble. His interpretation of Robert Schumann's 4th Symphony helped him win the 1982 Gino Marinuzzi Competition. During the 1980s and 1990s Viotti was a director at several opera houses in Europe. Pinchas Steinberg (born 13 December 1945 ) is a conductor born in mandatory Palestine. He is currently the Chief Conductor of the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. Early career Steinberg studied violin in the USA under Jascha Heifetz and Joseph Gingold. Pinchas studied composition under Boris Blacher in Berlin. Peter Schneider (conductor)
Peter Schneider (born 26 March 1939, in Vienna) is an Austrian conductor and opera administrator. Schneider served as kapellmeister of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf-Duisburg from 1961 to 1968; general music director of the Bremer Philharmoniker from 1978 to 1985; opera director and general music director of Nationaltheater Mannheim from 1985 to 1987; and general music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper orchestra, München from 1993 to 1998. Schneider sang as a member of the Vienna Boys Choir as a youth, and was named honorary conductor of the Vienna State Opera in 2004. Hermann Michael
Hermann Michael (1937–2005) was a German symphonic and opera conductor. He studied piano and cello at the Stuttgart Conservatory and had not formally studied conducting when he audited a master class led by Herbert von Karajan in Berlin in 1960. Michael then took a three-week master class with conductor Hans Swarowsky and was invited to the first Cantelli Conducting Competition in Italy, which he won. Michael served as von Karajan's assistant at the Vienna State Opera and undertook guest engagements before being appointed director of the Bremen Opera, where he served from 1970 to 1978. After 1984 he was active in North America, conducting the symphony orchestras in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, and Washington D.C. Hans Wallat
Hans Wallat (18 October 1929 – 11 December 2014) was a German conductor, GMD in Bremen, at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, Theater Dortmund and Deutsche Oper am Rhein. A specialist for the stage works of Richard Wagner, he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival and internationally. Career Born in Berlin, he studied with Rudolf Neuhaus in Schwerin. He worked at theatres in Schwerin, Stendal, the Meiningen Court Theatre and in Cottbus. In 1958, Wallat was appointed ''Erster Kapellmeister'' at the Leipzig Opera. He left the GDR shortly before the Wall was built, and was ''Erster Kapellmeister'' at the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1964. Wallat specialised in German opera, focussed on the works of Richard Wagner. Hans Walter Kämpfel (22 June 1924 – 22 April 2016) was a German conductor, composer and Generalmusikdirektor in Aachen and Bremen. Life and career Kämpfel was born in near Ingolstadt. After passing his Abitur in 1942 at the Wilhelmsgymnasium München, Kämpfel studied at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Munich, now the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, with Hans Rosbaud, Joseph Haas and Rosl Schmid, among others. He then began his musical career in 1947 as répétiteur at the Bavarian State Opera. At the same time, he worked for Karl Amadeus Hartmann in the concert series ''Musica Viva'' of the Bayerischer Rundfunk, which aimed at the performance and dissemination of Neue Musik in Germany.
