Brandon is a city in Minnehaha County, South Dakota, United States. Brandon is located five miles east of Sioux Falls. The population was 11,048 as of the 2020 census. History A post office called Brandon has been in operation since 1878. The city took its name from Brandon Township. Split Rock Creek
Split Rock Creek State Park is a state park of Minnesota, USA, located in Ihlen, or just south of Pipestone. The Works Progress Administration built a dam in 1938 to create a lake, which provided an opportunity for water recreation in an area of the state with few natural lakes. The dam was constructed of Sioux Quartzite, a hard red rock widely found in the area. A nearby bridge, Split Rock Creek Bridge, was also built by the WPA of Sioux quartzite in 1938. The bridge carries County Road 54 over the creek. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Minnesota Masonry-Arch Highway Bridges MPS. Big Sioux Recreation Area
Big Sioux Recreation Area is a South Dakota state recreation area in Minnehaha County, South Dakota in the United States. The recreation area is named for the Big Sioux River which flows through the park. The recreation area is located 4 miles east of Sioux Falls and is very popular for camping, cabin rentals, canoeing, biking, hiking, disc golf, snowmobiling and archery. Description The park is known for its large bur oak, eastern cottonwood, box elder and silver maple trees. There are over 7 miles of walking trails at the park. There is a 2.5-mile paved bike trail that connects with the city of Brandon bike trail. The Prairie Vista Trail is a horseback riding and mountain bike trail that is over 2 miles long. Great Bear Recreation Park
Great Bear Recreation Park, more commonly referred to as Great Bear, is a small ski hill in the northeastern section of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in the United States. It is owned by the City of Sioux Falls, and co-managed by Great Bear Recreation Park Inc. History Great Bear Ski Area was established in 1965 by Ron Clifford and later sold to Dennis Finke and Jerry Dirks in 1969. Great Bear started out as an old gravel pit with one rope tow and two runs. One longer run to the left of the rope tow and one shorter run to the right. Dennis and Jerry built the first chalet at the ski area. In the early days Great Bear was open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday expanding hours in the 1970s to every day. By the early 1970s Great Bear had expanded to three rope tows and seven runs.
