Leipzig (district)
Leipzig (official name: ''Landkreis Leipzig'') is a district ('' Kreis'') in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It is named after the city Leipzig, which is partly surrounded by the district, but not part of it. It borders (from the west and clockwise) the state Saxony-Anhalt, the urban district Leipzig, the districts Nordsachsen and Mittelsachsen, and the state Thuringia. Geography The district is located in the Leipzig Bay and is rather flat. Individual hills are found in the north (Hohburg Hills) and south of the district. Its larger rivers are the Mulde, Pleiße and White Elster. Also worth mentioning are the many lakes of the Leipzig Neuseenland in the west of the county, that were formed by flooding old brown coal pits. History The district was established by merging the former districts Muldentalkreis and Leipziger Land as part of the district reform of August 2008. Andreas Reuter
Andreas Reuter (born October 31, 1949) is a German computer science professor and research manager. His research focuses on databases, transaction systems, and parallel and distributed computer systems. Reuter has been scientific and executive director of EML European Media Laboratory GmbH and gGmbH since 1998 and Managing Director of the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS gGmbH) from 2010 until 2016. In October 2015, he was appointed Senior Professor at the University of Heidelberg. Life and career During his school time he volunteered in the company founded by Konrad Zuse in Bad Hersfeld. After graduating in 1968, he worked as a freelance programmer for companies and authorities. Stefan Altner
Stefan Altner (born in 1956) is a German musician, musicologist and cultural manager. Life Born in Brandis, Altner was a member of the Thomanerchor from 1966 to 1975 and attended the St. Thomas School in Leipzig. He then studied church music, e.g. organ with Thomas organist Hannes Kästner, piano with Herbert Sahling and basso continuo and harpsichord with Walter Heinz Bernstein, at the Leipzig Conservatory and, after graduating with a diploma in church music, worked as church musician in Zossen. After a successful from the GDR, he moved to Munich in 1984. Altner then worked as literary editor for the Bärenreiter publishing house. From 1986 to 1993 he was managing director of the Munich Chamber Orchestra and harpsichordist among the baroque soloists of the Munich Philharmonic.
