Branch MRT Line
The Branch MRT line was originally the third Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore, initially operated as a branch to the existing East West line. The line was long with four stations, and was operated by the SMRT Corporation. Travelling from one end of this line to the other end took about ten minutes, and the line was coloured brown and khaki on the rail map. The line is now part of the North South line, making it the first and only defunct line in Singapore. The line used to terminate at the centre track at Jurong East (then platforms C/D, now D/E). Trains operated at a six-minute frequency. History The line was conceptualized as the Western line during the early planning stages of the Singapore MRT network. History Of The Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore)
The history of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system of Singapore commenced with its planning in the 1960s, which finally led to its opening in 1987 with the launch of the 6 km section of the North South Line from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh. At the time, it was the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the country during its early days of independence. The only choices of public transport available in Singapore in the early 60s were buses, taxis and trishaws and the lack of seamless connectivity of the public transport system resulted in long and inconvenient journeys. Bukit Gombak MRT station is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the North South line in Bukit Batok, Singapore. Bukit Batok MRT station is an above-ground Mass Rapid Transit (Singapore), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the North South MRT line, North South line in Bukit Batok, Singapore. East West MRT Line
The East West line (EWL) is a high-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line operated by SMRT in Singapore, running from Pasir Ris station in the east to Tuas Link station in the west, with an additional branch between Changi Airport and Tanah Merah stations. It is the second Mass Rapid Transit line to be built in Singapore. The line is the longest on the MRT network (this title will be given to the Cross Island line upon its complete opening by the 2040s), with 35 stations, 8 of which (from Lavender to Tiong Bahru and Changi Airport stations) are underground. Siemens C651
The Siemens C651 is the second generation electric multiple unit rolling stock in operation on the North South and East West lines of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, manufactured by Siemens (SIE) under Contract 651. A total of 114 cars consisting of 19 train-sets were purchased in 1992 and introduced into service from 1995 onwards. These trains were built by Siemens in Austria. The Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151 is the first generation electric multiple unit (EMU) rolling stock in operation on the North South and East West lines of Singapore's Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, manufactured by a consortium led by Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) under Contract 151.
