The following is a list of characters that first appeared in the Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'' in 1985, by order of first appearance. They were all introduced by the show's creator and executive producer Reg Watson. The 1st season of ''Neighbours'' began airing on 18 March 1985. The first episode introduced the members of the Ramsay and Robinson families as well as bachelor Des Clarke, and his soon-to-be wife and former stripper Daphne Lawrence. Max Ramsay, his wife Maria and their sons, Shane and Danny lived at Number 24. Jim Robinson lived next door with his children; Paul, Julie, Scott and Lucy. Neighbours
''Neighbours'' is an Australian television soap opera, which has aired since 18 March 1985. It was created by television executive Reg Watson. The Seven Network commissioned the show following the success of Watson's earlier soap '' Sons and Daughters.'' Although successful in Melbourne, ''Neighbours'' underperformed in the Sydney market and was cancelled by Seven four months after it began airing. It was immediately commissioned by rival Network Ten for a second production season, which began screening on 20 January 1986. ''Neighbours'' went on to become the longest-running drama series in Australian television history. In 2005, it was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame. The storylines concern the lives of the people who live and work in Erinsborough, a fictional suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. David Clencie
David Clencie (born 1964 or 1965) is an Australian actor. He made his debut aged 15 in the children's television series ''Sam's Luck''. He was cast in the lead role of Sam Parkes, after impressing the producer while auditioning for the ABC network. He then appeared in police drama ''Cop Shop'' and the 1981 miniseries ''I Can Jump Puddles''. The following year, Clencie joined the cast of ''The Sullivans'' as Steve Sullivan, a role which he considered to be his big break. He also had roles in ''Home'', ''A Country Practice'', and ''Starting Out''. From 1985 until 1986, Clencie played Danny Ramsay in the soap opera ''Neighbours''. He left the cast after he and the producers agreed that his character would be rested. After leaving ''Neighbours'', Clencie had a career in real estate and became a voice-over artist for television commercials. Peter O'Brien is an Australian actor, best known for his role as an original cast member in 1985 of Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'' as Shane Ramsay. Career O'Brien played a regular role in short-lived soap opera ''Starting Out ''(1983), in then had guest roles in ''Carson's Law'' in 1983 and ''Prisoner'' in 1984 and appeared in ''The Henderson Kids''. He was then cast as Shane Ramsey, a regular original character in soap opera ''Neighbours'' on the Seven Network in 1985. He became one of the serial's most popular cast members, continuing in the series until 1987. He then played a leading regular role in drama series ''The Flying Doctors'' from 1988 until 1991. Ramsay Street
Ramsay Street is the fictional cul-de-sac in which the characters of the Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'' live. The street is set in the equally fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough. ''Neighbours'' storylines primarily centre on the residents of the street, which was named after Jack Ramsay, the grandfather of original character Max Ramsay (Francis Bell). A blackjack game between Jack and Sam Robinson determined whose name the street would be named after. Only six houses on the street are featured on a regular basis; numbers 22 to 32. Number 34 was featured for the only time in 2018. The cul-de-sac is at the end of a long street and the rest of the houses are on the other side of the main road which bisects it. A storyline within the show saw the name of the street nearly changed to Ramsbottom Street. Harold Bishop (Ian Smith) led a protest against it and won. Francis Bell (actor)
Wayne Francis Earl Bell (18 April 1944 – 3 May 1994) was a New Zealand-born actor who achieved international stardom playing the part of original character Max Ramsay in the early years of the popular Australian soap opera, ''Neighbours''. During his career he also acted in Australian serials ''The Sullivans'' and '' Sons and Daughters''. He appeared in 15 films from 1976 until his death. Career in ''Neighbours'' His character Max Ramsay, was a key character for the show's first year. Soon after the serial switched from the Seven Network to Channel Ten in early 1986, Bell abruptly left the show. To accommodate this loss, the new character of Max's brother Tom was hastily introduced. James Condon
James Thomas Condon (27 September 1923 – 14 February 2014) was an Australian actor of radio and stage, a scriptwriter and voice over, however best known for his numerous television roles in serials and television movies in Australia, particularly ''Number 96'' and ''Neighbours''. He was the husband of ''Neighbours'' actress Anne Haddy and the brother of theatre producer and actress Coralie Condon, who was a Medal of the Order of Australia recipient and known as the "First Lady of Western Australian Television". Coralie died on 31 December 2014, aged 90. Career James Thomas Condon was born in Fremantle, Western Australia. His career started in repertory theatre, before joining at ABC Radio in Perth in 1942; he would serve with the RAAF serving in the Air Force during World War II and eventuate to flight lieutenant. Anne Haddy (5 October 1930 – 6 June 1999), credited also as Anne Hardy, was an Australian actress, television presenter and voice artist, who worked in various facets of the industry including radio, stage and television. She was married to actor and scriptwriter James Condon. Haddy appeared in numerous television films early in her career, but was better known for her television soap opera/serials roles, starting with numerous roles in ''Crawford Production'' serials, she had a stint in cult series ''Prisoner'', as Alice Hemmings and a permanent role in '' Sons and Daughters'' as Rosie Andrews. Michael Martin (Neighbours)
Michael Martin is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'', played by Troy Beckwith. He made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 8 October 1985. The character was originally played by Samuel Hammington. Beckwith took over the role in 1992. Michael departed on 26 June 1998. Debbie Martin
Debbie Martin is a fictional character from the Australian soap opera ''Neighbours'', played by Marnie Reece-Wilmore. She made her first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 22 July 1985. Debbie was played by Mandy Storvik in her first appearance, and subsequently by Katrina McEwan. Reece-Wilmore was cast in the role when the character returned in 1992. Debbie remained in the show until late 1994 and returned in 1996 and left again on 22 October 1997.
