Boyndaminup National Park
Boyndaminup National Park is a national park in Western Australia. It is located in the Shire of Manjimup in the South West region. It was designated in 2004, and covers an area of 54.43 km2. Geography The park lies west of Lake Muir. It consists of two separate areas, with the smaller portion lying southwest of the main portion. The park is mostly surrounded by state forest lands, and both areas adjoin Shannon National Park on the west. Flora and fauna The park straddles two bioregions – the Jarrah Forest bioregion, also known as the Southwest Australia woodlands, in the north, and the Warren bioregion, also known as the Jarra-Karri forest and shrublands, to the south."Boyndaminup". The Shire of Manjimup is a local government area in the South West region of Western Australia, about south of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covers an area of , and its seat of government is the town of Manjimup. History The Shire area was first included in the Plantagenet, Wellington and Sussex Road Districts in 1871. Later the area was included in the Nelson Road District. The Shire of Manjimup originated as the Warren Road District, which was gazetted on 3 July 1908, initially consisting of seven elected members. It was renamed the Manjimup Road District on 23 January 1925. Lake Muir
Lake Muir is a freshwater lake, with a larger surrounding wetlands area, that is located in the South West region of Western Australia. The lake lies near Muirs Highway, north of Walpole and southeast of Manjimup. Description The lake has a surface area of . Lake Muir and its surrounding wetland lies within the Lake Muir-Byenup System, a area of internal drainage containing a complex of wetland systems. Lake Muir may, in flood, overflow southwest into the Deep River catchment (and possibly also southeast into the Frankland River via Poorginup Gully). Lake Muir is usually brackish (1000–3000 mg/L TDS) at the end of winter, saline by summer and dry throughout autumn. Shannon National Park
Shannon National Park is a national park on the south coast of Western Australia, south of Perth and southeast of Manjimup. It was declared a national park in 1988. The park covers the entire Shannon River basin. It is part of the larger Walpole Wilderness Area that was established in 2004, an international biodiversity hotspot. The area contains biologically rich wetlands and heathlands as well as old growth and regrowth karri forests. The area remained largely untouched by logging until the 1940s due to the inaccessibility of the area. A timber mill and the town of Shannon were established in the mid-1940s as a result of a timber shortage during World War II. The town once boasted over 90 homes and a hall, post office, church and nursing station. A dam was built in 1949 to guarantee water supply during the summer months. Jarrah forest is tall open forest in which the dominant overstory tree is ''Eucalyptus marginata'' (jarrah). The ecosystem occurs only in the Southwest Botanical Province of Western Australia. Warren, also known as Karri Forest Region and the Jarrah-Karri forest and shrublands ecoregion, is a biogeographic region in southern Western Australia. Located in the southwest corner of Western Australia between Cape Naturaliste and Albany, it is bordered to the north and east by the Jarrah Forest region. Its defining characteristic is an extensive tall forest of ''Eucalyptus diversicolor'' (karri). This occurs on dissected, hilly ground, with a moderately wet climate. Karri is a valuable timber and much of the karri forest has been logged over, but less than a third has been cleared for agriculture. The Walpole Wilderness Area is a group of conservation reserves on the south coast of Western Australia. The area includes vast tracts of jarrah, red tingle and karri forests surrounding granite peaks, rivers, heathlands, and wetlands.
