Boxing At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Super Heavyweight
The men's super heavyweight boxing competition at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney was held from 23 September to 1 October at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Being the heaviest class, super heavyweights were limited to those boxers weighing over 91 kilograms (200.6 pounds). Competition format Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. This event consisted of 16 boxers who have qualified for the competition through various qualifying tournaments held in 1999 and 2000. The competition began with a preliminary round on 23 September, where the number of competitors was reduced to 8, and concluded with the final on 1 October. Both semi-final losers were awarded bronze medals. All bouts consisted of four rounds of two minutes each, with one-minute breaks between rounds. The Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre was a convention, exhibition and entertainment complex in Darling Harbour, Sydney. Designed by Philip Cox, the complex opened in 1988 as part of an urban renewal and redevelopment of the Darling Harbour area during the period. The complex was eventually demolished in 2013 to make way for the International Convention Centre. (Louis) Michael Macaque (born 15 August 1974) is a former Mauritian super heavyweight boxer, who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, and served as the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. He was also the runner-up in super heavyweight boxing at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, after being defeated by England's Audley Harrison. Oleksiy Mazikin (born 16 February 1975) is a Ukrainian boxer best known to win the silver medal at the 2001 World Championships in the Men's Super Heavyweight division.
