Bour's Minimal Surface
In mathematics, Bour's minimal surface is a two-dimensional minimal surface, embedded with self-crossings into three-dimensional Euclidean space. It is named after Edmond Bour, whose work on minimal surfaces won him the 1861 mathematics prize of the French Academy of Sciences. Description Bour's surface crosses itself on three coplanar rays, meeting at equal angles at the origin of the space. The rays partition the surface into six sheets, topologically equivalent to half-planes; three sheets lie in the halfspace above the plane of the rays, and three below. Four of the sheets are mutually tangent along each ray. Equation The points on the surface may be parameterized in polar coordinates by a pair of numbers . Minimal Surface
In mathematics, a minimal surface is a surface that locally minimizes its area. This is equivalent to having zero mean curvature (see definitions below). The term "minimal surface" is used because these surfaces originally arose as surfaces that minimized total surface area subject to some constraint. Physical models of area-minimizing minimal surfaces can be made by dipping a wire frame into a soap solution, forming a soap film, which is a minimal surface whose boundary is the wire frame. However, the term is used for more general surfaces that may self-intersect or do not have constraints. For a given constraint there may also exist several minimal surfaces with different areas (for example, see minimal surface of revolution): the standard definitions only relate to a local optimum, not a global optimum. Edmond Bour
Jacques Edmond Émile Bour (; 19 May 1832 – 8 March 1866) was a French engineer famous for the . His parents were Joseph Bour and Gabrielle Jeunet. He was a student at l'École Polytechnique and graduated at the top of his class in 1852. After teaching for a year as a professor at l'École des Mines de Saint-Étienne, he became a professor of engineering at l'École Polytechnique. In 1858 he obtained the grand prize in mathematics from the Académie des Sciences for his treatise on ''L'intégration des équations aux dérivées partielles des premier et deuxième degrés''. Most of his work was on the deformation of surfaces, and in particular, he introduced the sine–Gordon equation in 1862.
