Botswana Patriotic Front
The Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) is a political party in Botswana. History The party was officially launched in July 2019 as a split from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). It was backed by former President and BDP leader Ian Khama after he left the party. In the 2019 Botswana general election, October 2019 general elections, the party received 4.3% of the vote and won three seats, all in Khama's home area of Central District (Botswana), Central District – Tshekedi Khama II elected in Serowe West, Leepetswe Lesedi in Serowe South and Baratiwa Mathoothe in Serowe North. However, party leader Biggie Butale failed to be elected in Tati West. Botswana Democratic Party
The Botswana Democratic Party ( abbr. BDP) is the governing party in Botswana. Its chairman is the Vice-President of Botswana, Slumber Tsogwane, and its symbol is a lift jack. The party has ruled Botswana continuously since gaining independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. The BDP is sometimes classified as a paternalistic conservative party and is also a consultative member of the Socialist International since 2014, which is a group including many worldwide social-democratic parties. The BDP was primarily shaped by two of its founders, Sir Seretse Khama and Quett Ketumile Masire. Traditional Setswana communities make up the party's base, which has led the BDP to remain a conservative movement. Central District (Botswana)
Central is the largest of Botswana's districts in terms of area and population. It encompasses the traditional homeland of the Bamangwato people. Some of the most politically connected Batswana have come from the Central District, including former President Sir Seretse Khama, former President Festus Mogae, and former President Lt. General Seretse Ian Khama. The district borders the Botswanan districts of Chobe in the north, North-West in the northwest, Ghanzi in the west, Kweneng in southwest, Kgatleng in the south and North-East in the northeast, as well as Zimbabwe also in the northeast (Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South Provinces) and South Africa in the southeast (Limpopo Province). Tati West
Tati West is a constituency in the North-East District represented in the National Assembly of Botswana since 2019 by Simon Moabi a BDP MP. The constituency existed between 1965 and 1974, when it was replaced by North-East after two elections. It was restored in 2002 for the 2004 elections and acquired its current boundaries in 2012. Serowe (population approximately 60,000) is an urban village in Botswana's Central District. A trade and commercial centre, it is Botswana's third largest village. Serowe has played an important role in Botswana's history, as capital for the Bamangwato people in the early 20th century and as birthplace of several of Botswana's presidents. More recently it has undergone significant development as the town and as Botswana continues to grow. Tshekedi Stanford Khama (born 9 June 1958) is a Botswana politician. He is currently Member of Parliament for Serowe West, representing the Botswana Patriotic Front. Biography Khama is one of four children of the first President of Botswana, Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams Khama, and is the brother of former president Ian Khama. Political career Khama was elected to the National Assembly in Serowe North West in a 2008 by-election as a Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) member. He was subsequently re-elected in 2009 and 2014. From 2012 until 2018 he was Minister of Environment, Conservation, Natural Resources and Tourism. In 2018, President Mokgweetsi Masisi made him Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development. 2019 Botswana General Election
General elections were held in Botswana on 23 October 2019 to elect MPs and local government councillors. Despite a high profile split in the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in May 2019 when former President Ian Khama left the party and switched his support to the new Botswana Patriotic Front, the BDP's vote share increased to almost 53% as the party won 38 of the 57 elected seats in the National Assembly, a gain of one compared to the 2014 elections. Biggie Butale
Biggie Ganda Butale (born 3 August 1972) is a Motswana politician and the current leader of the Botswana Republican Party (BRP) since 14 November 2023. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Tati West in the 11th Parliament from 2014 to 2019. Butale, the founding President of the Botswana Patriotic Front from July 2019 to July 2023, was ousted following a leadership dispute. Subsequently, he established the BRP on 14 November 2023.
