Bothriembryontidae
Bothriembryontidae is a family of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Orthalicoidea. Taxonomy This family has been named Placostylidae and had no subfamilies (according to the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005). Breure et al. (2010) moved '' Prestonella'' and '' Bothriembryon'' to Placostylidae. Breure & Romero (2012) confirmed previous results from 2010 and they renamed Placostylidae to Bothriembryontidae. * subfamily Bothriembryontinae Iredale, 1937 * subfamily Placostylinae Pilsbry, 1946 - for species from New Zealand and Melanesia Prestonellinae was formally described as a new subfamily within Bothriembryontidae in 2016. Bruggen A. C. van, Herbert D. G. & Breure A. S. H. (2016). "Prestonellinae – validation of the name as a new subfamily of Bothriembryontidae (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Orthalicoidea)". ''Zootaxa'' 4084: 590–592. Therefore three subfamilies are recognized in Bothriembryontidae: * sub ...

''Prestonella'' is a genus of air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod molluscs in the family Bothriembryontidae.Breure A. S. H. & Romero P. (2012). "Support and surprises: molecular phylogeny of the land snail superfamily Orthalicoidea using a three-locus gene analysis with a divergence time analysis and ancestral area reconstruction (Gastropoda: Stylommatophora)". '' Archiv für Molluskenkunde: International Journal of Malacology'' 141(1): 1-20. . Taxonomy Prestonellidae (as a not available name) was tentatively placed as a synonym of Aillyidae in the taxonomy of the Gastropoda by Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005. ''Prestonella'' is the type genus of the family Prestonellidae, but Prestonellidae is not an available name, because it has no diagnosis. ''Prestonella'' was considered as the only genus in the family Prestonellidae. Herbert (2007) has classified ''Prestonella'' in Bulimulidae ''sensu lato'' within Orthalicoidea. Herbert & Mitchell (2009) have classified ...

Bothriembryon
''Bothriembryon'' is a genus of tropical air-breathing land snails, terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusks in the family Bothriembryontidae. B. J. Smith (1992) made the last review of the genus summarizing all known data. Distribution The land snail genus ''Bothriembryon'' is endemic to Australia but forms part of the Gondwanan element in the superfamily Orthalicoidea. ''Bothriembryon'' species are mostly patchy in their distribution. Taxonomy This genus was classified with the Bulimulidae by Pilsbry (1900), Breure (1979)Breure A.S. H. (1979) "Systematics, phylogeny and zoogeography of Bulimulinae (Mollusca)". ''Zoologische Verhandelingen'' Leiden 168: 1-215. and by B. J. Smith (1992).Smith B. J. (1992) "Non-marine Mollusca". In: Houston W. W. K. (Ed). Zoological Catalogue of Australia, 8. Australian Government Publishing Service, Canberra, xii + 405 pp. It was classified in tribe Bulimulini, in subfamily Bulimulinae within the family Orthalicidae according to the taxono ...

(2022). MolluscaBase. Archaeostylus Brook & Hayward, 2022 †. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1582263 on 2022-06-19 This species is the typetaxon and only member of the monotypic genus ''Archaeostylus'', found in Pliocene age sediments of northern New Zealand. ''Archaeostylus'' is thought to represent an extinct, sister lineage to the modern flax snail species currently living in New Zealand, and is not a direct ancestor. Description ''Archaeostylus manukauensis'' has a large long shell that is thin, elongate-conical, and slightly dorso-ventrally compressed. Unlike other genera of flax snail, ''A. manukauensis'' lacks a thickened outer lip surrounding its aperture, and instead possesses a thin peristome wi ...

Taxonomy 2005 taxonomy This taxonomy, as accepted by Bouchet & Rocroi, was based on the study by Nordsieck, published in 1986, and the classification as formulated by Schileyko in 1999. However Bouchet & Rocroi diverged from this classification in uniting the families Bulimulidae and Orthalacidae. They also considered the family Placostylidae as a distinct family from Orthalicidae, and the family Coelociontidae a distinct family from Urocoptidae. However, the position of the families M ...

Placostylus Ambagiosus
''Placostylus ambagiosus'' is a species of flax snail (Māori: pūpū whakarongotaua), a large air-breathing land snail, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusc in the family Bothriembryontidae. Description This snail has a large ( long) shell, which is heavily calcified. The size of the adult shell is habitat dependent, but the shell shape is not plastic. ''Placostylus ambagiosus'' is highly valued by Te Aupōuri me Ngāti Kurī (the indigenous people of northern New Zealand) as a food source, musical instrument and in the past this snail provided alarm calls at night warning of approaching invaders. Distribution This land snail species occurs in New Zealand. It is restricted to a small fragmented area of Northland Region, including the Aupouri Peninsula and Motuopao Island. In the past local Māori moved and propagated populations of ''Placostylus ambagiosus,'' so today at least three extant populations are found on old pā sites (fortified settlements), along wit ...
