Boston Minutemen
The Boston Minutemen were an American professional soccer team based out of Boston that played in the North American Soccer League (NASL). They played from 1974 to 1976. Their home fields included Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough, Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy and Sargent Field in New Bedford. Portuguese legend Eusébio played for the Minutemen in 1975 as did famed American player Shep Messing. The Minutemen started well, winning the Northern Division title in their first season and drawing over 9000 fans a match to Alumni Stadium, good for 5th highest in the league. They lost in the playoffs to eventual league champion Los Angeles Aztecs. Veterans Memorial Stadium (Quincy, Massachusetts)
Veterans Memorial Stadium is a multipurpose outdoor stadium in Quincy, Massachusetts. Built from 1937-1938 under the Works Progress Administration, it seats 5,000 spectators for football, soccer, Rugby union and lacrosse. The stadium underwent a $1.2 million renovation in 2006, including accessibility improvements and new synthetic turf as well as making the stadium usable as a lacrosse, rugby and soccer field, and another $1.5 million renovation in 2018, adding extra capacity and a large electronic video board. It is the home field of Quincy High School athletics, namely football and soccer, and the New England Free Jacks of Major League Rugby. Miami Toros
The Miami Toros was a professional soccer team in the North American Soccer League from 1972 to 1976. The club was founded in 1967 as the Washington Darts, and moved to Miami, where they played the 1972 season in the NASL's Southern Division as the Miami Gatos. In 1973, the club rebranded as the Miami Toros. Their home field was at times the Miami Orange Bowl, Tamiami Field and Miami Dade College's North Campus Stadium. After the 1976 season, the team moved to Fort Lauderdale and became known as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers and later moved to Minnesota and became known as the Minnesota Strikers. Prominent players included 1973 league MVP Warren Archibald who was from Point Fortin, the smallest borough in Trinidad and Tobago, and 1975 league MVP Juan Carlos Moramarco who was from Rosario, Argentina. 1975 NASL Indoor Tournament
In early 1975, the North American Soccer League hosted its first league-wide indoor soccer tournament over the course of seven weeks. All but four NASL teams participated. Overview Though the Dallas Tornado had won the NASL's 1971 Hoc-Soc Tournament and the Atlanta Apollos staged two league sanctioned pilot matches at the Omni in 1973, the birth of the modern game in North America can be traced to 1974, when three indoor exhibitions against the touring Soviet Red Army of Moscow club took place. The games were played on a field the size of a hockey rink, with goals 4 feet high by 16 feet wide. Much like hockey, matches were played in three 20 minute periods, allowed free substitution, and featured six man sides (five field players and a goalkeeper). Baltimore Comets
The Baltimore Comets were a professional soccer team based in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1974, the Comets were an expansion team that played two seasons in the North American Soccer League. The team originally played its home matches at Memorial Stadium but moved to Burdick Field located at Towson University during the 1975 season. At the conclusion of the 1975 NASL season the team moved to San Diego, California rebranding as the Jaws. Ian McKechnie
Ian Hector McKechnie (4 October 1941 – 11 June 2015) was a Scottish footballer, who played as a goalkeeper. Ian McKechnie was born at a maternity unit in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire but was raised in the village of Lenzie in Dunbartonshire and later in Chryston in Lanarkshire, near Glasgow. McKechnie signed for Arsenal in September 1958 after being invited to play for a Glasgow amateur side Letham Thistle (a Glasgow club with associations with the Arsenal scouting system). He was signed as an outside-left, but George Swindin, the then Arsenal manager, saw his potential as a goalkeeper. McKechnie went on to make 25 appearances between 1961 and 1964 for Arsenal. Geoff Davies (footballer)
Geoffrey Peter Davies (born 1 July 1947) is an English former professional footballer who played in the United Kingdom and the United States as a midfielder. He began his career with Ellesmere Port Town and Northwich Victoria, before helping Wigan Athletic to win the Northern Premier League title in 1970–71. He joined Football League club Chester in 1972. The next year he transferred to Wrexham, before he moved to the United States to play for the Boston Minutemen in 1975. He moved on to the Chicago Sting the following year, and then returned to England to play for Port Vale and Hartlepool United. He spent 1977 in both the States and England, playing for the San Jose Earthquakes, before signing with Wimbledon. He joined the Los Angeles Skyhawks in 1978, and had a brief spell with the San Francisco Fog in 1980. John David Coyne (born 18 July 1951) is a former professional footballer who played as a striker. Active as a professional in England, the United States and Australia, Coyne made over 150 career appearances. Born in England, he played international football for Australia. Early and personal life Born in Liverpool, England, he is the father of footballers Jamie Coyne and Chris Coyne. Bertram Nathanial Bowery (born 29 October 1954) is an English former professional footballer who played in England and the United States as a striker. Early and personal life Bowery was born in Saint Kitts and Nevis, and grew up in England. His son Jordan is also a professional footballer. Career Bowery began his career in non-league football with Ilkeston Town and Worksop Town, before starting a professional career with Nottingham Forest where he became the first signing of Brian Clough, agreeing a two-and-a-half-year contract for a fee of £2,000. Mickey Cohen is an American former professional soccer goalkeeper who played in the North American Soccer League and American Soccer League. Cohen attended Long Island University where he played on the men's soccer team. In June 1968, he was drafted by the St. Louis Stars of the North American Soccer League; however, he was not signed by the club. In 1971, he signed with the Connecticut Wildcats of the American Soccer League and remained with them through the 1978 season. In 1976, he played one season for the Boston Minutemen of the NASL.
