Borkou Department
Borkou ( ar, بوركو) is one of two departments of the Borkou Region in Chad . It was established by Ordinance No. 002/PR/08 of 19 February 2008. Its capital is Faya-Largeau. Bourkou was formerly one of four departments in the Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region of Chad, in the northern Saharan territory of Borkou Borku (french: Borkou) or Borgu (') is a region of Central Africa, mostly in Northern Chad, forming part of the transitional zone between the arid wastes of the Sahara and the fertile lands of the central Sudan. Borkou Region
The Borkou region ( ar, بركو) is a region of Chad which was created in 2008 from the Borkou department of the former Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti region. Its capital is Faya-Largeau. Geography Borkou is located in the Sahara Desert, and contains parts of the Tibesti Mountains in its north. The highest point in Chad, Emi Koussi, is located in Borkou. The Bodélé Depression lies in the south-central portion of the region. The region borders Libya to the north, Ennedi-Ouest Region to the east, Wadi Fira Region, Batha Region, Bahr el Gazel Region and Kanem Region to the south, and Niger and Tibesti Region the west. Faya-Largeau
Faya-Largeau (also known as Faya, ar, فايا لارجو or ) is the largest city in northern Chad and was the capital of the region of Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti. It is now in the Borkou Region, which was formed in 2008 from the Borkou Department of the former Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti region. History Originally called ''Faya'', the town was renamed ''Largeau'' after French Colonel Victor Emmanuel Largeau; upon Chadian independence from France, it assumed the name ''Faya-Largeau''. The town was captured by Libya when Libya annexed the Aouzou Strip in 1975, but was retaken by Hissène Habré's forces in 1980. Libya recaptured Faya-Largeau in 1983, but retreated in 1987. Economy Due to the considerable underground water supply in the town, the main economic activities are agriculture and natron mining. Bourkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Region
The Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti (BET) was until 2008 one of the then 18 regions of Chad, its capital being Faya-Largeau. It comprised the former Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti Prefecture. Most of the region was part of the Sahara desert. In 2008, this region was split into three new regions: Borkou Region, Ennedi Region, and Tibesti Region. Subdivisions The region of Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti was formerly divided into 4 departments: Demography The region had a population of 70,603 inhabitants in 1993, of whom 59,479 are sedentary and 11,124 nomad. In 2009, the BET counted 286,986 inhabitants. The main ethnico-linguistic groups are the Daza (55.96%), the Teda (22.63%), the Zaghawa (10.17%) and the Arabs (2.57%). Borkou
Borku (french: Borkou) or Borgu (') is a region of Central Africa, mostly in Northern Chad, forming part of the transitional zone between the arid wastes of the Sahara and the fertile lands of the central Sudan. It is bounded N. by the Tibesti Mountains, and is in great measure occupied by lesser elevations belonging to the same system. These hills to the south and east merge into the plains of Ouaddaï and Darfur. South-west, in the direction of Lake Chad, is the Bodele basin. The drainage of the country is to the lake, but the numerous khors with which its surface is scored are mostly dry or contain water for brief periods only. A considerable part of the soil is light sand drifted about by the wind. The irrigated and fertile portions consist mainly of a number of valleys separated from each other by low and irregular limestone rocks. They furnish excellent dates. Barley is also cultivated.
