Boomerang (Nordic)
Cartoonito is a Nordic/Scandinavian children's television channel owned by the EMEA sub-division of the international division of Warner Bros. Discovery. Cartoonito was previously the feed of Boomerang, until it relaunched in 2023. History Beginnings as Boomerang In late 2005, Turner Broadcasting System Europe reported that they had intended to launch Boomerang in the Nordic region. They had also applied to broadcast it in the Swedish digital terrestrial network in the fall of that year. Boomerang was, however, not granted a license by the Swedish government at the time. On 15 September 2009, Boomerang was an evening block on Cartoon Network. On 30 September 2010, it was launched as a channel on Viasat's satellite platform, with the block closing the day before. Cartoon Network is a Scandinavian pay television channel broadcasting cartoons in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. The channel was created in 2000 when it replaced the Pan-European version of Cartoon Network in the region. History Cartoon Network was launched in 1993 across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and was originally twinned with movie channel TNT (later TCM) in a pan-European version. Cartoon Network ran from 6:00am until 8:00pm CET, with TNT taking over from 8:00pm to 6:00am CET. Canal Digital was a Nordic pay TV and internet service provider in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland that was founded in March 1997 as a joint venture between the French pay TV company Canal+ and the Norwegian telecommunications operator Telenor. The number of customers in 2017 was 838,000. From 2003 to 2020, Canal Digital was fully owned by Telenor. In 2004, Telenor Avidi was merged into Canal Digital and changed its name to Canal Digital cable television. In 2020, Canal Digital formed a joint venture with Viasat to form the company Allente. Viasat was a satellite and pay television brand, co-owned by the Swedish media group Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) in the Nordic countries, Antenna Group in Hungary, and by Viasat World internationally. Founded in Sweden in 1991, Viasat has previously been owned by Modern Times Group. The channels of both companies were broadcast from London. In 2020 Viasat formed a joint venture with Canal Digital to form the company Allente. The merger was completed on April 13, 2021. Digital Terrestrial Television In Sweden
Digital terrestrial television was launched in Sweden in 1999. The shutdown of the analogue equivalent started on September 19, 2005, and was finalized on October 15, 2007. The network uses the DVB-T-standard and broadcasts several free-to-air and encrypted channels on a number of multiplexes. The majority of the channels are encrypted and viewing them requires a decoding card. In June 1998, the government decided which channels were to broadcast in the network.
