Bon Wier, Texas
Bon Wier ( ) is an unincorporated community in eastern Newton County, Texas, United States, and is located along U.S. Route 190. The ZIP Code for Bon Wier is 75928. Historical development Established in 1905, the town was a stop on the ''Jasper and Eastern Railroad'' which was primarily a line servicing the lumber industry. The town's name was derived from the last name of two key men who were associated with the Kirby Lumber Company, owned by John Henry Kirby. B. F. Bonner was the sawmill manager, and Robert Withrow Wier was the town surgeon. The town was established to take advantage of the timber of the region as part of the company expansion. A post office opened for the town in 1906. Logging camps would operate in the vicinity intermittently from 1918 until 1935. In 1948, the railway was acquired by the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway. Sawmills were the key businesses for the town as late as the 1990s. John Henry Kirby
John Henry Kirby (November 16, 1860 – November 9, 1940) was a businessman whose ventures made him the largest lumber manufacturer in Texas and the Southern United States. In addition to serving two terms in the Texas Legislature, he also established the Kirby Petroleum Company. With his successful reputation, he was known by his business peers as "The Prince of the Pines" and "The Father of Industrial Texas". Sawmill
A sawmill (saw mill, saw-mill) or lumber mill is a facility where logs are cut into lumber. Modern sawmills use a motorized saw to cut logs lengthwise to make long pieces, and crosswise to length depending on standard or custom sizes (dimensional lumber). The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. From its starting point in Galveston, Texas, the railroad eventually extended northwestwards across the state to Sweetwater and northwards via Fort Worth to Purcell, Oklahoma. History 19th century In 1873, competition between the cities of Houston and Galveston was strong, and the Galveston, Houston & Henderson Railroad (GH&H) was the only rail link between the two cities. The competition between Houston and Galveston was fed by the quarantines, which were often imposed on Galveston traffic by Houston. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems.
