Esmeraldas, Ecuador
Esmeraldas () is a coastal city in northwestern Ecuador. It is the seat of the Esmeraldas Canton and capital of the Esmeraldas Province. It has an international sea port and a small airport (IATA location identifier: ESM). Club Deportivo El Nacional (until 2018 ''Club Especializado de Alto Rendimiento El Nacional'') is an Ecuadorian sports club from Quito, known best for their professional football team. The team currently plays in the Serie A, the first-tier football league in the country after gaining promotion in 2022. El Nacional has thirteen national championships (one less than Emelec and three less than Barcelona). Manta Fútbol Club
Manta was founded in 1998 after the purchase of the franchise rights from the defunct Manta Sport. From 1999–2001, the club competed in the Segunda Categoría, the third tier of Ecuadorian football league system before being promoted in 2002 to Serie. Manta won promotion again in 2003 to Serie A for the first time but finished poorly and were relegated back to Serie B where they would spend the next 6 seasons. 2009 saw the club back in Serie A but no titles were forthcoming and they were relegated again in 2014. They got promoted back to the Ecuadorian Serie A in 2020 and will play in the first tier after a 7 year absence. The Ecuador national football team ( es, Selección de fútbol de Ecuador) represents Ecuador in men's international football and is controlled by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF). They joined FIFA in 1926 and CONMEBOL a year later. Discarding an invitation to participate in the inaugural FIFA World Cup held in Uruguay, Ecuador did not make their tournament debut until 2002. After finishing above Brazil and Uruguay in the standings, the qualifying campaign marked the emergence of several players, such as Agustín Delgado, Álex Aguinaga, Iván Hurtado, Ulises de la Cruz and Iván Kaviedes, who would set the stage for Ecuador's achievements in the next decade.
