Bolton (Atlanta)
Bolton is a neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia, in the Upper Westside, i.e. far northwest of the city. It is part of Neighborhood Planning Unit D. Bolton Road and Marietta Road are the main thoroughfares. Bolton Academy is located here and the neighborhood borders Crest View Memorial Park. History Bolton was originally a separate settlement from Atlanta named after railroad commissioner Charles Bolton, and a stop on the railroad. Previous names of the settlement were Fulton, Boltonville and Iceville. It was incorporated in 1893. It had its own Freemason lodge. The area along with most of what is now called Buckhead was annexed to Atlanta in 1952. Upper Westside, Atlanta
Upper Westside is a colloquial area, comprising many historical neighborhoods located in Atlanta, Georgia. The neighborhood is located in the northwestern sector of Atlanta, west of I-75 and inside I-285, to the south of Vinings and to the west of Buckhead. It was developed in the 19th century as an industrial hub. Bolton, Riverside, and Whittier Mill Village are the largest neighborhoods comprising the district. Neighborhood Planning Unit
The neighborhood planning unit (NPU) is a community-scale governmental structure used in the City of Atlanta, Georgia. History The system was established in 1974 by Atlanta's first black mayor, Maynard Holbrook Jackson. His aim was to ensure that citizens, particularly those who had been historically disenfranchised, would be in a position to comment on the structure of their communities, and to ensure that the citizens would not have this ability stripped of them by politicians who found an involved and engaged public inconvenient. Mayor Jackson had the NPU system placed within the City Charter, which can only be changed by the Georgia Legislature. Buckhead is the uptown commercial and residential district of the city of Atlanta, Georgia, comprising approximately the northernmost fifth of the city. Buckhead is the third largest business district within the Atlanta city limits, behind Downtown and Midtown, a major commercial and financial center of the Southeast. Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is a school district based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is run by the Atlanta Board of Education with superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring. The system has an active enrollment of 54,956 students, attending a total of 103 school sites: 50 elementary schools (three of which operate on a year-round calendar), 15 middle schools, 21 high schools, four single-gender academies and 13 charter schools. The school system also supports two alternative schools for middle and/or high school students, two community schools, and an adult learning center.
