Boherbue
Boherbue (post office spelling) or Boherboy (Ordnance Survey spelling) () is a village in North West County Cork, Ireland. The village is in the civil parish of Kilmeen in the Barony of Duhallow, and spans the townlands of Gneeves, Laharan and Derrynatubbrid. Boherbue is within the Cork North-West Dáil constituency. History The exact time period for the first permanent settlement in the area in not known. It has been suggested that the first inhabitants of the area were probably nomadic due to the amount of 'forts and bailes' that have are recorded in the area. Other ancient monuments in the area, as listed in the Record of Monuments and Places, include several ringforts and fulacht fiadh. A permanent settlement was described as early as 1655 in William Petty’s map of County Cork. Boherbue Comprehensive School
Boherbue Comprehensive School is a secondary school in Boherbue, County Cork, Ireland. History This school was opened in 1973 as a co-educational, non-selective post-primary school. The term 'comprehensive' was current at that time and the curriculum of the school combined what were formally regarded as the 'secondary' subjects with the 'technical' subjects. This was seen as giving a broad range of subjects under which pupils with very varying degrees of aptitude, ability and skills could prosper. Sport Gaelic football is the most popular sport within the school and it competes in the All-Ireland Vocational Schools Championship. Duhallow () is a barony located in the north-western part of County Cork, Ireland. Legal context Baronies were created after the Norman invasion of Ireland as divisions of counties and were used in the administration of justice and the raising of revenue. While baronies continue to be officially defined units, they have been administratively obsolete since 1898. However, they continue to be used in land registration and in specification, such as in planning permissions. In many cases, a barony corresponds to an earlier Gaelic túath which had submitted to the Crown. William Petty
Sir William Petty FRS (26 May 1623 – 16 December 1687) was an English economist, physician, scientist and philosopher. He first became prominent serving Oliver Cromwell and the Commonwealth in Ireland. He developed efficient methods to survey the land that was to be confiscated and given to Cromwell's soldiers. He also remained a significant figure under King Charles II and King James II, as did many others who had served Cromwell. Petty was also a scientist, inventor, and merchant, a charter member of the Royal Society, and briefly a Member of the Parliament of England. However, he is best remembered for his theories on economics and his methods of ''political arithmetic''. He is attributed with originating the laissez-faire economic philosophy. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Mallow railway station is an Irish station on the Dublin-Cork railway line, Mallow-Tralee railway line and Cork Suburban Rail ( Cork Kent, Cobh and Midleton). Facilities Mallow's main station building is located on the south side of the railway tracks, nearest to the town, and is constructed from the grey stone typical of many Irish stations. Millstreet Railway Station
Millstreet railway station serves the town of Millstreet in County Cork. The station opened on 16 April 1853 and closed for goods traffic on 6 September 1976. Upgradings & improvements The original railway station was much smaller to the current one. The station was heavily upgraded for the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Millstreet. Before 1993, there was one track which went to Rathmore and Banteer. As part of the redevelopment plan, a new track was constructed opposite the main platform. This meant there could be two trains in the station at one time. However, since the Eurovision, the spare track has been rarely used. The platform was upgraded to meet EU safety standards, and is now much higher than before 1993. Facilities The station has two platforms, but only one is ever used.
