Bodedern
Bodedern is a village and community in the west of Anglesey, Wales. At the 2001 census, it had a population of 1,074, decreasing slightly to 1,051 at the 2011 census. The community includes the settlements of Llanllibio and Pen-llyn. Location Bodedern lies on the B5109, about east of its junction with the A4025 south of Llanfachraeth. About to the south, beyond the A55 road lie the villages of Caergeiliog and Llanfihangel yn Nhowyn. The Valley Wetlands, an area of lakes and marshes and a RSPB bird sanctuary, lie between these two villages. Bodedern is the closest village to the island's largest natural lake, Llyn Llywenan, which lies to the north. Education The village has a bilingual primary school, Ysgol Gynradd Bodedern, and a secondary school, Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern. St Edern's Church, Bodedern
St Edern's Church, Bodedern (sometimes referred to as St Edeyrn's Church) is a medieval parish church in the village of Bodedern, in Anglesey, north Wales. Although St Edern established a church in the area in the 6th century, the oldest parts of the present building date from the 14th century. Subsequent alterations include the addition of some windows in the 15th century, and a chancel, transept and porch in the 19th century, when the nave walls were largely rebuilt. Stained glass was also inserted into the windows of the chancel and transept. The church contains a 6th-century inscribed stone found near the village, a medieval font, and some 17th-century decorated wooden panels from Jesus College, Oxford, which was formerly connected with the church. Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern
Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern is a co-educational secondary school in Bodedern, Anglesey, Wales first opened in 1977. It is a bilingual establishment run by Anglesey County Council. History Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern opened on 6 September 1977 and the headteacher was Carol Hughes. It replaced the old National School in London Road which was then demolished in 1984. The school's symbol, designed by artist Tegwyn Francis Jones, is a thumb pressing seeds into the earth (hence the motto 'hau i fedi' or 'sowing to harvest'). The school in 2017 Pupils have the choice of studying a subject through the medium of English or Welsh. At GCSE, nearly all pupils must study at least two subjects in English and two in Welsh, in addition to English and Welsh as individual subjects. There are around 1000 pupils at the school. Presaddfed Burial Chamber
Presaddfed Burial Chamber is a listed monument in Anglesey, north Wales, comprising two Neolithic chamber tombs. It is a scheduled ancient monument and is located a short distance northwest of Bodedern. It is maintained by Cadw. Tombs There are two neolithic tombs at this site, which is located about south of Llyn Llywenan and about northwest of the village of Bodedern. The southern tomb is the more complete; it has a capstone some , supported by three stout upright stones at the south end and by a single more slender stone at the north. Additionally there is a wooden frame beside the north upright that may provide some additional support. The northern tomb is considerably damaged with two remaining uprights at the north end; the capstone has fallen and is leaning against them. Presaddfed Hall
Presaddfed Hall is a small Grade II* listed country house that stands amongst woodlands to the northeast of Bodedern, Wales, at the southern tip of Llyn Llywenan. Today the hall is a self-catering accommodation for rent. A walled garden lies to the east of the house. The hall's history The manor was originally owned by Hwfa Ap Cynddelw, circa 1100. Hwfa was once considered a man of rank and the wealthiest man on the island of Anglesey and was one of the founding members of the Fifteen Tribes of Wales. Hwfa was a part of the royal court of Aberffraw, and had been seneschal to the King of Gwynedd, and represented Owain Gwynedd during a coronation of the Gwynedd Prince. 2019 Inter Games Football Tournament
The 2019 Inter Games Football Tournament was an association football tournament which was held between 15 and 22 June 2019 in Anglesey, Wales. It was organised due to the hosts of the 2019 Island Games, Gibraltar being unable to run a tournament due to lack of pitches. As football is one of the most popular sports at the games it was decided to hold the matches elsewhere, albeit with the results not officially part of the Island Games history. It was announced on 1 May 2018 that the Welsh island had been chosen as the preferred venue to host. In August of that year 12 clubs put forward their names to hold matches and the draw for both the men's and women's competitions were made on 19 November by Wayne Hennessey and Osian Roberts. Llyn Llywenan
Llyn Llywenan (English: ''Yew Tree Lake'') is a lake in western Anglesey, Wales found just over north of the village of Bodedern and east of the town of Holyhead. At a maximum length of and breadth of it has a surface area of only . This makes it the largest natural lake on the island—both Llyn Alaw and Llyn Cefni are larger but are man made. The lake, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is situated above mean sea level and was chosen as an SSSI as there are uncommon aquatic plants there, as well as the fact that the lake is very shallow and could in the next hundred years or so be filled with silt. There is a small, rather featureless, island in the middle of the southern section of the lake which is roughly across. William Roberts (physician)
Sir William Roberts (18 March 1830 – 16 April 1899) was a British physician in Manchester, England. Biography Roberts was born on 18 March 1830 at Bodedern on the Isle of Anglesey the son of David and Sarah Roberts. He was educated at Mill Hill School and at University College, London, graduating with a BA in 1851. After completion of his medical studies he was appointed a house surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary and became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was appointed Professor of Medicine, Owens College, Manchester from 1863 to 1883. His particular research field was that of renal disease. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1877 and knighted in 1885. He died in London on 16 April 1899, and was buried in Llanymawddwy, Merionethshire.
